It is sometimes unclear whether the discussion about copying vhs to dvd is referring to purchased vhs movies that have been encryoted or just home movies. I am interested in copying my purchased vhs movies to dvd for personal use. Please advise on what if any equipment will do that for me. What would I need to do this through my computer. Thanks so much.
if you want to do it through computer basically all you need is a tv tuner card and a vcr player thats all i do is set the tv tuner to find the vcr and then just record the video to the hard drive and use a burning program (like nero vision express)to burn to dvd
A Capture Card Like the "Hauppague WinTV PVR-150/250" is perfect for this Type of Thing as it uses hardware Compression to Compress the Video signal to DVD compliant mpeg-2 files which you simply have to author to DVD useing a DVD authoring program.... The "Hauppaggue WinTV PVR-150/250" will also Ignore the Macrovision Copy Protection that is Found on Retail VHS Movies so you won"t have copy protection problems like with other capture devices... You can find one of these Devices on E-Bay for as Low as $75 US for the PVR-150 Model and under $150 US for the PVR-250 Model.... Cheers

Ok Im stupid how exactly do you use it? I am shopping for a DVD Recording unit and one of the reasons I want one is to A. Record programming from The tube. B. Copy all my old VHS home movies onto disk, this is very important as I am concerned I will lose them to degradation if I don't do it soon as they are twelve years old, and there are many things I don't want to loose. Are there any models of recorders that the problem that this item corrects, good enough, that you don't need this filter?
I am wondering what a tv tuner card is and where i might be able to buy one! Is it like a network drive that you can open in "My computer"??? I need help with this! Thanx!!!
A TV tuner card is a card that you Put in your PC"s PCI slot that you can use to watch and/or Record TV shows, or record from a VCR or other Analogue Video device On to your PC"s hard Drive.... To Recieve a TV signal you generally have to hook up to either a Cable TV Connection or if your really desperate or live in europe you can use a set of Rabbit ears to try to recieve a TV signal... There are also some Cards that will Capture a free to air Satalite signal but I have little experience with these cards.... You can get a cheap card for about $25 on e-Bay but a Cheap card will just cause you trouble so it is Good to spend the extra to get one that will Give you better results perferably one that uses hardware compression of some sort..... You can Find TV Cards at your Local Computer Store but depending on were you Live the selection might be limited to just a few and the prices over inflated, I find it is best to Look on-Line as you can sometimes find some cards for half there retail price at some places..... There are Lots of posts about different types of TV cards ,other capture cards ,how to Record the TV shows and how to Put them on to DVD in the Forum ,if you want to learn more about them ..... Cheers Cheers
You can buy an ILO04 Recorder or a LiteOn 5005 Recorder and install hack firmware that will over-ride the Macrovision. Or you can buy the gadget that Ireland posted above. I have an ILO04 with installed hack firmware. It was quite easy to do and I'm a newbie too. It worked perfectly. You can find the firmware by searching through these forums. Links to those files are posted in the DVD Recorder forum. If you don't feel comfortable changing the firmware on your recorder then I'd go with the gadget above. I haven't tried the gadget myself, though I am wanting to get one, everything I've read about it says it does work good.
