Is there a real difference between video cards because of memory ram. If it was a nvidia 7900 256MB and a 7900 512MB video card would the 512 preform better then the 256 becuase of the more memory?

Depends on what 7900 cards you are comparing. Theres the GT and the GTX. They would also have to have the same exact clock speed for the test to even be relevant.

Since the 7900GT doesn't come in 512 though(as far as I know) I'll assume that you are talking about the 7900GTX.

The amount of memory matters only in high resolutions. Say if you have everything on maximum settings at 1280x1024. Both would perform about the same with the 512MB card having a (slight) advantage. If you go any higher than that you have a gap between he two with the 512MB in front.

It really isn't the actual screen resolution that makes the difference though. It's the resolution of the textures on the objects around you. The larger the textures the more space you need. Say if you turn down the textures for the 256MB card you will play at the same speed as the 512MB again with slightly muddier textures.

But for the 7900GTX it actually doesn't matter either way because both can play any game at maximum resolution at maximum settings. Except for Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion which is EXTREMELY DEMANDING!! Then you would have to play at 1024x768 on both cards if you wanted playable speeds at maximum settings.

So if you were wondering which one to buy... get the 256MB. The 512MB just isn't worth it. If you weren't wondering which one to buy and just wanted to know... well now you learned something.

    I hope I helped a little.

Thanks i'm looking at laptops and I see the Dell insprion E1705 has the option for a 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS. Since technology always improves so quickly I was wondering if it would be worth it to wait until the laptop came out with a 512 MB video card option.

No. Get it now because that's already an excellent video card and will play any game perfectly with all the settings cranked.
