Video conversion help (please)

    I recored a video with my dgital camera and it is in .mov format which is primarily used for quicktime movies the quality is not that great but I haven't found a video file recorder online that I could use and I wanted to know which file type i should convert my .mov file too either

    mpeg1,mpeg2,avi, or wmv????

    also is there some free software I can download to convert my .mov files??? and is there any video editting softwareI can download to merge clips together or delete parts out of them???(something like windows movie maker)
