I am an I.T. Manager for a Non-Profit organization that has a need to record observations sessions and then later edit the video and author it to DVD. The problem I am having with this plan is that I have 2 separate observation rooms that will be recording 6-8 hrs per day. From that 6-8 hrs of video recording it is then edited for contect needed. The observation rooms are in a separate area from where the video editing is going to be done (about 300 Feet away.) So here are my questions: [bold] How should I Transfer the video from the camera to the editing PC which is 300 Feet away? [/bold] My idea was to setup the video camera which is mounted in the observation room and connect it to a headless PC that has a Video capture card. Then via the network copy to video files over to the Editing PC. My second idea is to setup a headless PC to transfer video to an external harddrive which could be physical moved to the PC that does the Video Editing. I have not purchased any PC hardware yet since I am not sure which route I want to go. For Hardware I feel pretty confident on which kind of PC to purchase. What Video Capture Cards are recommended? Thanks for any insight on this.
Firts of all, what type of camcorders are you using? If they are digital you don't need a capture card. Check this: http://www.digitalvideoclub.com/basics/transfer.php You can work with Firewire. If you can get PC's over there in a network that would be agood idea to get the files over to the editing stations. Another option is to buy on of those special hard drives that you can connect directly to a digital camcorder, like these: http://www.shining.com/products/totalsolution/citidisk_dv/ By the way: many camcorders will shut down automatically when you have them in recording mode stand by (which is the position you want without recording to tape). Remove the tape to disable this auto shut down.
This may be a silly question but do you have a Sam's Club near... I've seen some surveylence equiptment there, ours that we have saves the files in avi format and they are automatically cut up in 15 min. intervals but we get it from a private service- this may not work for you at all as I may be totally off base with what you're looking for. I've also seen wireless setups that may be easier to install. try here: http://search.samsclub.com/eclub/se...ems",+EXACT+@name_ancestry:"Complete+Systems"
