Is there software that allows me to edit a video file ie .avi or .mpeg without having to start a "Project"?
In otherwords edit an avi file and save it as an avi file without some of those wonderfull and obscure file extensions.
    Thank you in advance.

FYI a project file is merely a save point for your work progress, its not the end result or the outputed file.

Also in pinnacle studio you can not save a project if you wish but with most editing apps you'll have to let it make scenes out of the video so you can cut and paste faster.

Vdub/Vdub mod is the only worthwhile video editor I know of where get the whole file to edit akin to a sound editors.

what kind of editing do you want to do?

The free avidemux will let you edit an avi and save it without reencoding. I use it to remove commercials from my avi recordings, it works very fast. The finished avi is the same video/audio quality as the original and the exact same format as the original.

mpeg is more complicated, I use the paid version of videoredotvsuite because it also edits my mpegs without reencoding, it's frame accurate and it is also very fast in saving. It can also open up a dvd movie (video_ts folder) and edit the entire movie, I use it to turn r-rated movies into pg-13 movies.
A free mpeg editer is mpg2cut2 it isn't as frame accurate as videoredo but it does save without reencoding.

Thank you for your replies, they have been very helpful.
I only realy use he editor for removing adverts etc.
I have been using Magix and find the length of time to save the files is rather prohibitive.
    Thanks again.
