video playback problem within firefox

    when i try to play back video in firefox, half the time, it gives me the plug-in error. but when i go to install the plug-in it directs me to microsoft(ewww). and there is nothing to do there. Please advise. i am running firefox 1.0.4 on a emachines m5305 laptop, with XP media center edition SP2. thanx in advance for the help.
