Videos have become unwatchable

    Playing videos but the video appears to have lost all definition etc. I cannot post a screen shot as the video appears as blank when printscreen used

    By sliding the Brightness control down a bit it is possible to make out some details but basically the video is unwatchible. By going into File – Properties when video is played using Windows media Player I have determine that the codec being used is ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder see attachment ScreenShot007.jpg

    Now I played with using some avi to dvd programs just before this happened and I think that this is when the codec started to be used.

    I have tried other video viewers and the video always look the same. It does not matter if the video is avi, mpg or mpeg but I have noticed that if I play a DVD the video is OK and there is no codec listed.

    Attached as Codecs-1-1-06.txt is a listing of all codecs being used etc as determined by Sherlock (a program I found that lists codecs being used0. Mpg’s that also play wrong actually seem to use the MPEG Video Decoder codec.

    I have removed Nero using add/removed and re-installed it in the hope that this would fix it as well as reinstalled codec from M$ - NO SUCCESS!

    My question is

    How can I resolve this problem with viewing video. If I burn the video to a dvd then it will play OK on my dvd player.

    I have found the file in Windows\system32 as ffdshow.ax – should I just delete the file? If so what about those using MPEG Video Decoder

    for a start pressing print screen while watching a video file in any media player wont capture an image of whats on the screen it will only show a black background.

    you should get a wider variety of codecs download the klite mega codec pack off that free codecs website.

    also update you graphics card drivers

    Monitor driver update should not be required according to Gateway. I have tried the klite codec pack but with no success. I know about screen print showing black screen, definitely a problem when I cannot show the results but only have to describe them.
    It cant be the monitor as pictures etc work just fine. I have just tried a DVD created by someone else that plays perfectly on my DVD player but not on the PC.

    I never said that you should update your monitor drivers i said update your [bold]graphics card driver[/bold], thats the only thing that could be causing the problem especially since you already have klcodec

    if your using onbaord graphics then update your chipset drivers. (found here)

    if youve got none of them installed... download em all except the AMR modem drivers (unless of course you have the amr modem), and the usb drivers (you only need these for win 98)

    install all the drivers n you should see an improvement

    Well tried the update - it said I was already updated but forced it through. Still no joy so I went back and restored to a restore point taken at 17/12/06.

    Success - all vids display properly
