Ok so I know that I can't put the recordings from my vip722 DVR straight to my pc using the usb port, and I also know that although a hard drive can be used it can no longer be accessed on a PC. But I wanted to ask if there was some way to access those files, using a custom program or some such thing?

I was really exited when I heard about this DVR HD backup thing. Now I'm majorly disappointed.

If there are other options that will let me back up my shows somehow then I would appreciate the input there two.

    Thanks in advance!

I was able to record my shows by using the AV out on my tv and then using Windows Media Center in Vista to record my shows. Of course, I have to play them again, but that's what the second tuner is for right?

Yes, most unfortunate that no one was able to hack the encoded files from Dishnet PVRs since the old 71/7200s. It would be great to get the Hi-Def content.
