Hi, I just joined the forum, but have read hundreds of messages about "illegal disc" error messages... to no avail.

I've deleted and reloaded Nero, DVD shrink, DVDfab, DVD43, daemontools, (and others I forgot about) checked my DMA settings checked for the latest drivers and I forget what else. I have a Lite-On SOHW-1633S.

I can't even burn a DVD without encryption or burn my file of Jokes onto DVD straight from my hard drive.

I get an "illegal disc" message every time, from every program.

Even though I burned 100 movies with various media and another 20 using Fujifilm DVD-R before everything quit working, I'm going to go buy a different brand of media again, just in case. OR...

My girlfriend just moved in. She has a new Gateway 2.6 Ghz with an AMD Athalon. It's still a virgin.

Can someone tell me exactly what to download and do so I don't screw something up? All I want to do is rip movies, both old and current, and make copies of some I have, that have no encryption.

    Thanks!!!

To start of easy I would suggest to purchase the combo of CloneDVD 2 and AnyDVD. These two applications are the best and do not give you any errors well that are program related, the only errors you may get are related to the disc you are trying to back up or the blank media you are using.

Here are some other thing you can try to do.

Make sure you have AnyDVD running in the background.

    1. Use DVD Fab Decrypter to rip the disc to your hard drive.
    2. Use DVD Shrink to compress the movie so it can fit onto a single layered disc.
    3. Burning the disc use CloneDVD 2.

Here are some guides and links to the software listed above.

Save your money and post a burning log instead.

Liteys prefer the plus format. They can booktype the plus format to dvd-rom- therefore eliminating the NO Disc errors when it comes to stand alone players recognizing them.

Post that burn log. It'll reveal the firmware version-which too can give your drive a no disc error if it isn't programmed to handle your media. Switching from 8x to 16x is where this issue would show up. Drives need their firmware updated from time to time-to keep up with the newer media. Usually when you get a failed during leadin phase-which tells you it doesn't recognize that media.

Virgin PC: I've got 4 all rigged up with nero6 oem versions. Rip with dvd shrink and autoburn with nero. I do have anydvd on my main pc for the newer releases that shrink can't handle- and I leave it turned off until the need arrises.

Dvd43 is a hidden background ripper, just like anydvd. If you have both on your pc,they will clash.

Then you have extra packets in nero that can screw you up. It's called INCD. Again,a burn log will reveal if incd is loaded on your pc.

Step on up from fuji. The japanese fuji are very good, but not so for the taiwanese fuji. Try verbatim or taiyo yuden.

I should have clarified... last year, I was ripping movies with NOTHING but DVDshrink. I didn't use it between about Oct and Feb, but when I tried, it was no longer working. That's when I started reading forum posts and trying different things. I appreciate the first post about DVD Clone, but money is an issue right now.) I still may do that if nothing else works) Hoping to figure out which freeware to use.
My computer is a few years old and my daughters have downloaded even more on it than I have. I don't know if the software that came with their Sony MP3 player hosed everything or if it's something else. (Yes, I have run the Sony software removal tool)
So, IF I were to start with a fresh, new, clean PC, will DVDshrink work as a standalone program? Do I need anything else to go with it to take care of encryption? Thanks for taking the time to help!

Thanks Saugmon. I'll try DVD+R, but it might require I hook up another DVD player to my TV. I have a Samsung DVD Writer that says do NOT use DVD+R... I will also try a burn later and post a log.
