Could someone help me to get the codecs I need to use virtualdub mostly avi files?
There seem to be about 8000 choices.
Mostly just a bit of color and brightness.
Right now it cant even open an avi file!!
    Thank you for any help..

To be clear, are you referring to the codec (which encodes the output file) or 'filters' which are used to sharpen, resize, adjust colour, etc.
VirtualDub comes with a range of basic filters included (Video > Filters > Add).

To open an avi file in VirtualDub it requires that at least the XviD codec is installed on your PC.
The same codec then becomes available to compress the output file (Video > Full processing mode > Compression.

I checked the file with g spot it is an avi file and it said codec was installed..

    Your not doing anything wrong.
    VirtualDub requires VFW codecs.
The file probably started out as another format (wmv?) and was converted to AVI without being re-encoded with a vfw compressor.
You might want to try installing FFDSHOW - it lists mp42 in it's VFW configuration - then try the file in VirtualDub again.
Note that FFDSHOW can be installed/uninstalled without messing up like some codec packs do.

Alternately, maybe try AviDemux - I don't know if it handles mp42 but it's a little friendlier than VirtualDub and contains filters too.
