I've converted my old video8 home movies to mpeg2, then Divx6. I now want to edit (split) the divx files, so I tried virtualdub. Virtualdub lets me select the frame to start from, but the output file is very aproximate, sometimes 12 seconds out!

One thing I've noticed is that if I keep trying to split the same file at the same point is seems be out by the same amount, almost as if its spliting at a predetermined point thats not the one I chose. Sometimes it seesm spot on, but others its way out.

Anybody any ideas what might bw causing this?

It is cutting on the closest key frame. Make sure you are using the latest version, then you should be able to use the smart renderer feature to re-encode the last vop, inserting a new I frame where you want to cut. Much better to edit before/during encoding. For instance load the MPEG2 into AVISynth, use trim() commands to cut it, then encode the script.

Ouch double encoding but Cuttermaran can cut MPEG2 and is frame specific.
