The computer had a program running called "extra antivirus". When spyware doctor deleted it, the computer crashed and hasn't been the same since. The computer will not shut down, I cannot restore from a restore point and when I connect it to the internet, I get the Blue Screen Of Death and:

    *** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0xf717fc7c, 0xf675d7ec, 0x00000000)

I went into safe mode and ran Hijackthis, copied the log to a floppy and loaded it into another computer so I could send it to you.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you.

    Hello lawyerjim,

Looks like that boy of yours has been into your computer again. [IMG]

You have a DNS Changer Trojan… They can be difficult to remove but we’ll give it the old Heave-Ho if we can.

First, if you can get into Safe Mode, you should be able to go to Safe Mode with Networking so you can use your internet connection there.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and before the Windows icon appears press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode with Networking".

    Fix entries using HiJackThis

    Launch HiJackThis
Click the Do a system scan only button
Put a check next to the entries listed below (if they still remain)

    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{5F2103C0-85B9-4CCA-94CD-64A2F7178811}: NameServer = 85.255.112.132;85.255.112.12

IMPORTANT: Do NOT click fix until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now
Click the Fix checked button and close HiJackThis

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- Don't forget this.
    • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

    • Please post the MBAM Log and a fresh HJT log in your next reply.

You might also boot to Normal Mode and see if we had any affect…. Let me know what goes?

    2OG

    @lawyerjim,

Very good, your HJT Log is Clean now. : )

Allow me to make a few suggestions:

First of all, you are using an older version of HijackThis. Please do the following to download and install the latest version of HijackThis v2.0.2:

CLICK HERE to download the HijackThis Installer:
    1. Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    2. Double-click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
    3. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
    4. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.

You may uninstall/delete the older version once you have successfully downloaded and installed the latest version of HijackThis v2.0.2.

In order to catch those Trojans that you were infected with, before they can do damage:
Download and install – Comodo BOClean protects your computer against trojans, malware and other threats. It constantly scans your system in the background and intercepts any recognized trojan activity. The program can ask the user what to do, or run in unattended mode and automatically shutdown and remove any suspected trojan application. Comodo BOClean currently supports more than 60,000 malware items and offers automatic daily updates.
    And, it’s FREE……..

I have a problem now in that disk defragmenter says it cannot start.

    Any suggestions?

    Maybe your disc is full..
    What is the message?

Check it Start -> My Computer -> Right click the drive icon -> Properties
See if it’s full or almost full. Defrag needs room to work.

I think defragmenter needs at least 15% free space. This one has 26% free space. The box that pops up says:

    Disk Defragmenter could not start.
