I have been getting this pop-up window every time I start my computer, which is running on XP. It says Norton Antivirus protection is turned off. Clicking the popup takes me to security centre, where it says Virus Protection is "Off".
But when I go into Norton, it seems everything is fine. Running LiveUpdate turns it back on in Security Centre.
Is this a virus/worm which is turning off my protection, or is it harmless?
    Any ideas would be appreciated!

I also use Spybot and Ad-Aware, and run full system checks quite frequently over my machine, so far they haven't found anything wrong

If you have a creative sound blaster card installed, the software is conflicting with norton.

I have pay Norton, subscription lasts until mid next year. I ran the online scan from the link above but it came up with nothing found.
I don't think it has to do with soundcard, because it is only in the last week or so that the problem has been occuring, and I haven't made any hardware changes.
    Any other suggestions?

since you're running xp (it seems),if the popup is from xp and NOT norton, in the windows security dialog, look for "antivirus protection" there should be a box to check that says something like "i am running my own antivrus solution, will monitor it myself, so bugger off you poofter" or something like that.

    hope this helps
