Anyone heard anything about this? A friend of mine emailed me this today: URGENT Security Update! You KNOW that I do not usually send out security warnings BUT this is CRITICAL so I am letting you know about it... Please DO TELL others about this too! So What's The Problem? Essentially there is a new exploit that has been found that could rival the "MS Blaster Worm" from 2003 - and that infected MILLIONS of PC's in just days and caused havoc for many users. Microsoft says it has found evidence two weeks ago of a new RPC (Remote Procedure Call) attack that can potentially infect un-patched Windows PC's across the Internet with NO USER action required. (This one does not come via email....) I strongly recommend that you to download and install this patch manually.... and be sure to reboot again after installing the patch - links to Microsoft's website are below. (NB - Microsoft are also rolling this out via Windows Update (aside from the normal Tuesday updates). If you have received a single Microsoft update in the last 24 hours & it required a restart, you may actually have it installed.) You can check to see if you have this update installed by going to the "Add Remove Programs" section of your Windows Control Panel & by making sure you have a check mark in the "Show Updates" check box at the top of the "Add Remove Programs" window. (Just look through the list for "Security Update (KB958644)" If you are interested in reading more details from Microsoft go here here. Windows Security Patches: Microsoft has posted several versions of the patch that apply to its different Operating Systems: Windows Desktop: # Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 - Security patch download # Windows Vista 64-bit Edition with Service Pack 1 - Security patch download # Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or 3 - Security patch download # Windows XP 64-bit Edition - Security patch download # Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 - Security patch download Windows Server: # Windows Server 2008 32-bit Edition - Security patch download # Windows Server 2008 64-bit Edition - Security patch download # Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 or 2 - Security patch download # Windows Server 2003 64-bit Edition - Security patch download
Make your own mind up... usually M$ updates and patches cause more problems than they solve. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-oct.mspx
