From the list Halo should work not sure about gamepad support, Halo 2 works fine and supports gamepad, but I prefer mouse+keyboard.

Other games not on the list that I have tried and can guarantee work on vista:
    -NFS Most Wanted
    -Crysis
    -CoD4
    -Assasin's Creed
    -Bioshock
    -UT3

I'm getting a new gamepad soon so will update on gamepad compatibility soon.
My vista laptop is new so I am still installing games and not all are installed yet.

    Hope this helps

PS - Which gamepad do you have??

Thanks Ray, i may just give Halo 2 a try!

The gamepad i have is a Logitech Precision. Nothing special, i'll upgrade if i have to. I've not played a computer game for over 10 years and just want to give any old game a try out to see if i'm still into gaming. But i need it to be compatible with a gamepad, i have tried a couple of games on the keyboard and just cant get with it, it pains me!

I love the look of COD4 and Crysis, but i hear a top end 'spec' is necessary for those games to run well. I think my laptop would struggle unfortunate'ly!

To see if your laptop can run a game, go here
Choose the game, it will tell you if it works on your laptop or not

Update - These games also work on Vista, just tried them ;)

    -NFS Undergound 2
    -Gears Of War
    -FEAR

I know what you mean, the keyboard does take a little getting used to, but when you get used to it, it's the best way to play a first person shooter.

Is this your controller, if so it ain't gonna cut it. To play any modern day games you need dual analogue sticks.
Personally, I'm leaning towards the logitech cordless rumblepad 2, as I've heard it's compatible with many games:

Probably going to get this today

PS- Call of Duty 4 isn't that demanding, and it's an amazing game

Thanks, i'll check out my laptop's gaming potential when i get home tonight. Its my graphics card that concerns me, i have an ATI Radeon HD 3470. I've got my fingers crossed it will run COD4, its def the #1 game i'd like to play!

Of the games you've listed, plus using the list above, i'd say we have both HALO 2 and FEAR as being 'Vista/Gamepad' compatible. FEAR, i have read, is a great game, probably something i'd like.

Yes, thats my gamepad. I tried to get something similar to the PS1 gamepad as i always liked that. I was not fussy about rumble sticks, but had no idea not having them would cause compatibilty problems. I'll upgrade...... let me know how you get on with your new logitech cordless rumblepad 2, i might just buy one for myself. I have also read that the X-BOX 360 controller is compatible with many PC games so i was aiming to get that if upgrading was neccessary.

Don't know why you are worrying, the 3470 is quite a good card :D

The 360 controller for PC has the most compatibility, with basically all GAMES FOR WINDOWS games, but it isn't available here, where i live.

That's why I am aiming for the cordless rumblepad as its the next best alternative.

Go with the 360 controller if you can find it. Best on the market ATM

It's perfect, just what you need.
It's cheaper now and FREE DELIVERY!! what more do you need.. :p

I'm in Saudi Arabia, and the shipping cost here is quite steep, and most retailers don't ship electronics here

Go with the link you mentioned, it looks to me like that's what you need.

PS - You might need custom 3rd party drivers if it doesn't work properly with some games.

Ah ha, how would i go about getting those then, assuming they'd be neccessary?

Unfortunately the shipping aint free for me. I'm living out in Poland which falls under the 'rest of the world' catagory. I think i'll be able to find it out here though, but probably at a higher price.
