Hi All, before i start i just want to say i have searched this forum and google etc for answers but none have worked, I may be doing something wrong or not ticking a box someplace but thats why im here so some nice guy will take pity and help me out. THE PROBLEM just installed vista ultimate and set up media centre with my nice shiny new tv and it will not even think about playing movies for me(avi) it keeps saying it needs a codec, so away i went and downloaded codecs etc and media player will play it fine but still media centre says no. online i read i needed media control installed along with ffdshow. i have tried numerous versions of both and i cannot get it all to work together. I really do think its something silly cos everyone talks about having ffd icons in the task bar..... i get nothing. get the feeling the proggie isnt running at all but im buggered if i can find an exec to run or a shortcut to get it going all i have is config options etc. when i run media control's test app i get an error in the title bar saying " ffdshow has not been found (32786 handle used ) " my ffdshow file is "ffdshow_beta4a_rev1723_20071224_clsid" my media control file is "MediaControl_x64_4.6 " PLEASE HELP ME get this all going, i dont really want to use vlc etc cos media centre looks good and the remote etc is just soo handy THANKS LOADS IN ADVANCE Jeff

Kboyts - I hope you get a result on this dude i still have no idea what to do about it, i have installed vlc for now but if i get a fix for our problem ill send you a pm on here sure, and you do the same for me sure. cheers bud bye Jeff
Try downloading a codec pack, K-Lite are the best: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm My XP Media Center (2006 Edition) played AVI's fine without any extra codecs required, while Vista doesn't haha, go figure mate, this could just be one of Vista's many, many bugs.
i know for a fact that it can do it somehow i got the copy from a friend and he is able to watch everything on it, it was one of the main reasons for me doing the upgrade, i had used vista home edition on my brothers lappy and thought it was crap as there were so many silyy problems with programs not working right but stven has had no issues whatsoever, only problem is he is away on holiday now and ill need to wait for him to get home before i can find out how he got his system sorted. i tried a few different codec packs but none have sorted the problem so far. vlc seems to run a bit slow with a few movies too for some strange reason,
