Is it possible for me to just buy the Mac OS X and install it in place of Windows Vista on my laptop. I read of a way of doing it but it sounded like it was a hack or something someone had to work at to make possible. I thought that you should be able to swith OS's on any PC. If it cant be done, then I'll just buy a Mac. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Oh and if my question didn't give it away, I am a real novice when it comes to this.

Mac osx is optimised for mac hardware.. there is a pc version, but it's reported to be pretty duff, with very patchy hardware support.. (osx i386 version users please add anything .. findings whatever)

If you want a switch from vista then mandriva is supposed to be good on laptops, as are a lot of the new linux distros.. acer and dell are both offering laptops with linux pre-installed.. I would check what they are up to before committing yourself to buying yet another commercial os which will probably be just as bad as vista.

I don't know why someone would troll a Mac forum and say that Leopard will probably be just as bad as Vista. Leopard is modern, smooth, and clean. Everything else is a decade behind. Most Linux distros feel like what they are: Wal-Mart, Windows knock-off operating systems. They're worth as much as they cost and are not for people that have actual lives (girlfriends, etc.).

If you have the technical know-how you can try OSx86. Other than that, there's no substitute for the real thing.

Personally, I'd use (and have used) Debian with WindowMaker if I was forced to go ghetto.
