Hello. I am new to converting .mpeg to .avi and was wondering which setting and codecs are the experts' choice when doing this with VirtualDubMod. I don't want to inflate the file size (if anything I want to reduce it) but I don't want to lose much picture quality either. There are a few settings in this programme, so if anyone can help me choose the best one I'd be really grateful. Cheers...

Oh, I should add that my purpose for the conversion is viewing them on a standalone Divx compatible DVD player. Thanks...

I'd go with XviD for the video codec. If you are planing on resizing or any other filtering, I would suggest frameserving via AVISynth to avoid a colourspace conversion.

Thanks for your help. I'll give it a go. Does anyone know what will happen to the file size? Thanks...

size = length * bitrate. If you use a lower bitrate than the orginal size goes down. If you use a higher bitrate then size goes up.
