This is going to sound weird because I have never seen anyone have an issue w/VLC before including me. I can not play any movie w/VLC unless I go to VLC and open the movie from there and if I try to move a movie or video file without it being in a folder, I get an IE error message and dr. watson right afterwards and ie crashes of course. The event type for IE and dr. watson is BEX. I have more but I am not sure how much info that you might need to help me. Thanks, Sapph
If you right click on the video file and select 'properties' 'open with' > 'choose program', then select VLC from the list and check the box so that it always open with VLC, and 'ok' That particular type of file will open anywhere simply by double clicking on it. If the video files have different extensions, eg .avi or .mpg, then you would only have to do it once for each type.
Thank-you but I already did that a long time ago. I have used VLC for many years now. This happened all of a sudden. Even when I try to move an .avi or .mpg that has the vlc icon-immediate error message and crash. Sapph
Explorer crashes rather than vlc?? Apparently it's a codec issue, and related to the way explorer draws the little thumbnails from a video frame. Change to list view and see if it goes away. If it does have an effect then.. Run regedit and find the following key :- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler Delete the “Default” value then close. You should now be able to see .avi previews almost instantly but without the crashes. The same applies for other media file types.. same location but mpg will be HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.mpg\shellex\PropertyHandler and so on..
Thanks, but when I try to delete I get the error message, "Unable to delete all specified values". Since you mentioned codecs, let me uninstall and reinstall them one by one and see what might be happening. Thanks again! Sapph
I hunted it down for you (not a windows user :lol http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/ has DivX verion 5.2.1 (replace 5.2), which among other things fixes “An issue causing Explorer to run slowly when showing thumbnails of DivX files”. Uninstall 5.2, install 5.2.1, re-enabled shmedia.dll ('regsvr32 shmedia.dll'), and now .avi’s thumbnail and should act fine.
i was having the same problem you were having, question for you? what version of windows do you have? i have vista home basic, what i had to do was go to vlc players site and down the latest version for vista, i think it has a c on the end of the version, after i got the version for vista i did not have any problem with vlc player, now windows media player is another thing, it don't matter if it is a store bought dvd or a burn't dvd, the picture lags, but i can play the same disk with power dvd and no problem at all, and my specs are amd athlon x2 dualcore 2.0 2gb ram 128mg video card 15.4 true brite screen
Didn't notice this problem with vista home premium.. machine has higher specs, but seemed to play fine after installing the k-lite codec pack.
I have winXP and I solved the problem by uninstalling a codecs pack and then uninstalling and reinstalling VLC! Thanks for all your help! S(*)
Hello, I too have noticed that with the last upgrade with vlc the movies are playing back but lagging. Meaning, I can see the lips moving however the audio is delayed. I have tried uninstalling vlc and re-installing, however it is not working. I notice when I play back the same movie on my desktop ( this issue i just described is taking place on my laptop) that it plays back perfect on the desktop. No lagging. The version of VLC on the desktop is an older version. The version on the laptop is a newer version. So with that said I really think it's an issue with VLC. I know this does NOT solve your issue. However, i thought I'd shine some light that the possibility does exist that there may be an issue with the newer version of VLC.
I think that you are right about that because I re-installed w/an older version. NOW I have a problem w/an OS error coming up when I go to play the movies. It is almost as if my OS doesn't like me playing movies w/VLC... S(*)
