I have a few VLC wmv files that play perfectly but I also have a couple that when played show only a screen full of distorted colour with no picture to be seen at all and no audio(red or blue with some yellow) and I need help to view these. The colours look to be in strips or block running from the top of the screen to the bottom.

They also won't play on any other player either.

    Thanks in advance.

Assuming your wmvs are not corrupt, try to run them on anyone else PC. If they show Ok, you are probably lacking some codec.
Which one?. Well... one possibility I think is running Nero's InfoTool in both machines, it tells you all about the system. In mine, some video codecs it identified were:
Cinepak Codec by Radius : 1.10.0.11
    Intel 4|2|0 Video V2.50 : 5.1.2600.5512
    Códec Intel IYUV : 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2108)
    (...)
Or just try installing an all-inclusive codec pack, such as www.k-litemegacodecpack.com or www.k-litemegacodecpack.com
Since wmv is a Micro$oft child, it should play with Window$ Media.
    Have success!

If they behave like that in every player (you have tried.. bet you haven't tried a real hardcore media player like mplayer) then they are corrupt.. lost of virus installer videos that accompany a drive by "license or codec install" download look like this is you manage to play them.. because they have no index and the interleaving is deliberately messed up to make the player take the suggested action in the header.

NO codec will solve it... they were made garbage.. and will remain so.
