Hey AD..Hope everybody is in good Spirits & Health today..
I'm just looking for some critique on this somewhat new AVI codec.VP7 from On2..
I'm starting to see this more & more in torrents..infact I'v been deleting the files that I get that are VP7 becaus I dont want to install another codec...I'm one of those Codec Paranoid types..well, "cautious is more accurate I suppose".. Anyway..has anybody had any issues with this codec..?? it seems to be gaining in popularity.. althow..popularity seems to be regional in the video world.. I thought Matraska would end up being the prefered container, I guess if you live in the eastern Euro world it is..??? Smart chaps over there..!!
Anyhow...does Anybody have any user opinions..?? is this a prefered mobile codec,? or mainsteam..??

Matroska isn't an avi container, it is a completely different container than avi or you mean storing video in an mkv container using VfW compatibility mode? Much better to go with AVC and store it natively.

You could use mplayer and load the VP7 decoder directly if you don't want to install stuff.

Personally I don't like proprietary stuff, especially when it doesn't work any better than open standards like MPPEG-4. At least there are open source decoders for VP5/6 now though.

thanks for the reply..I understand what MKV is..I edited the post when I saw I typed AVI befor container..Have used Staxrip to convert to MKV..I personaly like the Audio stream options and the overall results..but, nobody would download the MKV vids..so, I pretty much gave up on MKV.
as for the VP7..I dont need sugestions on how to play the files..was looking for members that have knowledge on the installed properties of this codec..bugs/compatabillity issues/compression issues/program conflict issues...so on... thnx anyway...

My point was that by using mplayer with the dll you can avoid bugs/compatibility issues/program conflicts and still be able to play back the files rather than deleting them.

I installed VP7 personal sometime back here to test. Still installed, I just don't use it, so I guess there are no conflict problems. There is a thread over at doom9 where you can read about various bugs/fixes, comparisons, etc.
