First of all, hello to all. My first post on this forum...

Now regarding the subject, I have read up on the information about panasonics VRO format used on DVD-RAM discs to quite some detail. I've been using a DMR-E20, and have recently transitioned to the new DMR-EH60D at work, and have occasionally come across the need to edit certain material on the PC. I currently have several .VRO files backed up onto the PC from when I was going through the transition, unfortunately I didn't copy the IFO & BUP (I think) files across with them, meaning I couldn't then put them back onto DVD-RAM for re-use with either DVD recorder.
The PC is kitted out with an Matrox RTX100, which means if I can get the files to play ok, i can just record the programmes via the composite output.
The thing is, the files have a couple of chapters within them, and I beleive they also use differing bitrates (within a single VRO file). This meant, on playback, the output would become corrupt at certain points in the file. (I assume when bitrates fall out of tolerance levels for the codec, as it doesn't happen at the chapter points)
I scoured around for software that supported this format, and came across quite a few with some success, like vobtool, which extracted up to 38 segments of the VRO (although there were only 2 actual recordings within the file). I've tried eternally to convert these files, without success.
So, I decided to put the files onto a firewire drive and take them home to see what I could do there. When I tried to play the files in Media player classic (and powerDVD), and they played perfectly (it just filled a single frame in black at the point where it went wrong before)! So I loaded the files into VDubmod and upon scrolling across to the point where there were errors, they cropped up again. I then tried to match the settings on my work PC to see if I could play them as I did at home, thus being able to record it, but no joy.

So, as you might see, I've come close, but I'm also coming close to the end of my tether. Help me out here if you can, this has tortured me for a long time now, and I'm desperate to get these video files to my colleague! Any help will be received with many thanks and a releived man :)

AAAgh! I'm so close to solving this I'm sure.
OK, I've got one step nearer (I think). I installed VLC on my works computer, and it played the file just like MPC played it on my home machine, but there was no output via my RTX100, although the audio also worked.
Do you think copying the MPC .inf file from my home machine would make it play with the same config? I have the same versions of codecs & players installed on each machine. Or does it go a lot deeper than that? I would assume the RTX drivers may be causing the differing playback issues, can anyone confirm this?
My last resort would be to run an internal capture program, so I could record the PC's playback, and capture the stream / screen, play it back, and (hopefully) re-record it onto the DMR-EH60D. What would people recommend for doing this?

    Any help???

Could I ask the moderators to move this topic into the MPEG1 and MPEG2 encoding (AVI to DVD) section?

    Thanks!

So from what I get here you just want to be able to edit your VRO files and maybe Output them through your Matrox unit or what would be better for Quality would be to author the edited VRO files back to DVD with your own Menu"s and Chapters.....

VRO Files are Basicly just Mpeg-2 files with AC3 audio so you can use a Good Native Mpeg editor Like "Womble Mpeg Video Wizard 2005" which will allow you to edit and Join and arrange your VRO files in any way you want and even add filters and effects and Transitions all without re-encodeing the whole file and without quality Loss....

It doesn"t matter that the Video in your VRO files use different Bitrates as Long as the Video Resolution/Frame Rate/Audio bitrate/ audio Sample Rate are the Same then they can be edited together without any negitive effects.....

When you are Done editing in "Womble Mpeg Video Wizard 2005" it will save your Project as a Mpeg-2 file, Now if you would Like to Put this Mpeg-2 file onto DVD with menu"s and Chapters ect then all you need is a Proper DVD authoring Program Like "MediaChance DVDLab Pro" which will let you Put the Files on to DVD with Menu"s and Chapters and Scene selections and all that other good Stuff......

If you Believe there is an area of one of the VRO files that is Corrupted or has some problem then you can try to repair in useing the "Mpeg GOP Fixer" in the Womble Program which can Fix Gop errors and Time Code errors and audio PTS errors ect which might make the File Playable but if not then I suggest you edit out that area of the Video so it Doesn"t ruin the DVD....

Also if you output the Mpeg-2 through the Matrox unit Via Composite to a VCR or DVD Recorder then there will be some Quality Loss because you are Converting a Digital Signal Back to analogue to output through the Composite Cable....

    Cheers

Hi Minio, Thanks for taking the time to respond to my request.

I read through these forums, and have tried this already, unfortunately, it gave the same results as all the players did. The GOP fix didn't work either, which I was suprised at. I even tried the Panasonic software specifically made for this filetype, but because I didn't have the other two smaller files with it, it wouldn't even read it.
I eventually managed to get around the problem yesterday anyway. I basically switched the work's Matrox G550 for my FX 5200, and used the TV output along with VLC to play the putput to the DVD unit, without many troubles. So my problem was solved.

    Thanks again for your time!
