I've been using the aShampoo Burning Studio to record DVD's and it's very reliable, but the menu creating part of it is lame. Is there any program that would allow me to add a simple menu, possibly with my own background and music directly, to the AVI so that it becomes part of it?
That way when I imported the AVI into my burning program, the menu would already be there.

Have a look at Ulead DVD MovieFactory, it has various background's (over 40, less in trial) to use or you can add your own plus it has music you can use (it is lame) or you can import your own. It used to incorporate MainConcept encoder, I don't know if it still does but pretty sure it will encode your avi too and it will burn the result's as well. Setting's are down below, left corner after you add your avi, project setting's>mpeg setting's>customize. Not free and pretty hefty installed size but an excellent program I've been using to author mpg for year's. Ashampoo will not be necessary, doubt you can import an avi to it anyway but don't what kind of quality or time you will see but should be good. Haven't used it to encode anything for age's but was fast and good then, good support too any time I've used it.

Ok, got curious here, UMF will encode avi quickly and with very good quality. A 1:40 avi took about 2 hour's to encode on a 2 pass VBR and burn. I also converted the same avi with MainConcept totally tweaked and time's and quality were comparable. Aspect ratio's looked similar too even though I can set it more precisely in MC. Overall, I'm impressed

Actually I think I answered my own question in that I finally found something that works for me, TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4. It's got fantastic menu creating ability and is very fast in burning and very reliable overall.

I've had Nero which is also good on menu's but it has broken in the past on me and when it did it was impossible to reinstall.

I really like the menus in TMPGEnc, they are pretty and the creating ability works good.
I also use mpeg video wizard dvd, because I like its menu and video tree function.
