I have a new compaq laptop that came with Sonic DigitalMedia solutions V7 pre-installed.So far I have not been able to complete burning an audio cd. I have an oem version of nero for an external burner i have that is also capable of burning Lightscribe media as is the burner in my laptop does also.they are both dual layer(laptop & external burners). Can I just unistall the Sonic software and use the Nero OEM instead? I went to the roxio site to thier forums to find a solution. There was none & I'm not the only user experiencing this same problem.Or should I purchase the full version. I'm more familiar with the Nero anyway since i use that on my desktop along with AnyDVD,DVD Shrink & DVD Dycrepter. Oh by the way my laptop is a Media Center Os. The burner is a Matshita(Panasonic) DVD-Ram UJ-851S there are no firmware updates for this burner and software updates for the Sonic don't help the problem.seems from what i got from the roxio forum is that it has a conflict with Windows Media Player which I do use to rip cds. Also the WMP doesn't burn the cds either.I take it that the conflict goes both ways. I posted questions about the burner itself in the dvd writers forum but no responses. I now know it isn't a media problem but most likely software. Thanks any help greatly appreciated. I almost forgot it will burn the audio files to cdrw.

    Hi coachop94
Install Nero and see how it goes. You can download 6.6.0.18 and use the serial # from the oem.
Package 1 - burning rom, express, etc.
Package 2 recode, vision showtime etc.

I have Sonic DigitalMedia v7 and Nero 6.6.0.18 on my laptop w/ a matshita burner. Used programs to burn cd's. No conflict on my set up.
Since you're able to burn audio cdrw's but not cdr's it might be a media problem.
    What error do you get?

Have you checked Compaq's site to see if there are any updates for the laptop?

Give Nero a go - if it fails you can post the log and we can take a peek.

    Nice gift for your sister!

Give it a go. If Nero fails just look here for the log:
    program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory.

Just be sure to edit out the serial # - usually begin w/ 1A, 1C or 5C.

Yeah the (REFURB) computer I bought for my sis had a bad hard drive.Returned it for a HP MCE has more power and goodies than the Compaq. I think she'll be happier with it.The hard drive looks new too.It does have the same software as he one I returned. But,it's what she's familiar with. No issues burning cds.At least now she can get her classes online easier and do her homework faster so she can go to bed.Now I can try to resolve my burning issues:) Thanks for the help. I'll let you know how it goes.

Ok not familiar with that error so have you installed Nero and tried to burn a cd w/ it?
My guess is when using Sonic w/ the cdrw's you doing the same steps when trying to burn to a cdr?

Same cdr's used in you sis's pc that failed in your laptop?

I installed nero from the cd-rom that came with my external drive. I saved the log but don't know how to post it. I figured it out. Sometimes I'm a little dense :) Log is in next post. I used the memorex black cds.I don't have this problem on my other computer. You think i might need more ram?

Freeing some ram up would be good your log shows - Memory in use : 85 %

CDR code: 00 97 26 66; OSJ entry from: CMC Magnetics Corporation
Not the best cd's here even though your other drive will burn them this drive doesn't like them cause you also get this in the log which usually points to media - 0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND

Try some made in Japan Fuji or Maxell. Sony cd's aren't bad either.

Update Nero to 6.6.0.18 - may help Nero recognize the drive better. Right now it's showing this - Drive is autodetected - recorder class: Std. MMC recorder

    Here's the links:
Package 1 Burning Rom, Express etc.
Package 2 Recode, Vision, Showtime etc.

    Give that a go.

THANK YOU!!! Well, I stopped at WallyWorld (Walmart) on my way home tonight to pickup a few things and found some MIJ Maxell cd-r pro discs. Ran the nero clean tool installed the updated version you suggested and finally was successful in burning an audio cd. I hope this burner likes my dual-layer verbatims & sony dual-layer dvds. This buying all these different brands can get expensive.:) Good thing my desktop will burn anything you feed it. I bought my daughter a laptop for Christmas (EMachine).Hope hers is not as picky. I probably have 400 cd-rs of various brands largest quantity are TDK's. This matshita will burn the Memorex cdrw's fine. So I guess it's back to WallyWorld for the Pro Maxell's They only had 4 or 5 25pks @ just under $10.00 each so I'm going to have to find larger quantity pks. 25 is not going to cut it. Thanks for all your help. Hey the sig with the dog is cute. Reminds me of a Maltese I once had. Got a poodle now that thinks she's a toddler I just love her to pieces. BTW got any idea who makes quality lightscride cds/dvds this is a lightscribe burner I'd like to use that feature too.

    You're welcome coachop94 :)
You picked up some good cd's - snatch those while you can - they're made by Taiyo Yuden - great stuff!

Laptop burners can be a pain sometimes on media. Part of the problem is the laptop manufacturer supports the drive and doesn't always keep the firmware update to help it with media.
The Memorex cdrw's you have are probably made by someone besides CMC that's more compatible w/ this drive.

Dual layer media on this one - hmmm maybe hit or miss. I'm not too confident on Matshita to burn a dual layer. Personally I would use the one in the pc instead but give it a go and see what happens.

Lightscribe media well Verbatim makes them but I'm not too sure on who the actual manufacturer is. Might be CMC. For their DVD media it's usually MCC and MKM (good stuff) but cd's they also use CMC.

I tried burning an audio cd with the new maxells using the sonic audio module and it failed same error as before. That leads me to think it's a software problem. I'm going to try burning another cd using a memorex black using the updated Nero to see what happens. I won't be using that sonic crap. I may have to purchase the full Nero to get all the features. How stable are the other apps in 6.6.0.18? I'll let you know how it goes.

@Binkie7: Hi, I was having a look at some HP LightScribe CD-Rs that came with my PC. They have a HP hub, but are Verbatim 97m34s23f. These are about 18 months old.

Also checked my Verbatim CDs (all in jewel cases) with following results:
Verbatim DataLifePlus CD-R Super Azo = Verbatim
    Verbatim CD-R CD-Recordable = CMC
    Verbatim Colour CD-R = CMC

Binkie, I noticed the memory in use is kinda high I shut down my firewall,anti-virus & internet connection. For sure it doesn't like the black memorex cds. Does Nero give logs on good burns? I'd be curious what 's different when things go right.

Mucho gracias on the manufacturer info on the HP and Verbs cd's!

    @coachop94
Yeah you memory is still high. In this log is that with the antivirus and firewall shut off?
Check the system tray (bottom right hand of desktop) and see what's running there too.
This log still shows 84% memory in use. Same burn error too.

Yep Nero saves the successful burn logs too. Think it just saves the last 10.
    Look here: program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory

Binkie,Yes that log is with firewall,anti-virus,internet,& wifi shutdown.Something must have been holding the memory. I did find some fuji cd-rs in bestbuy that were made in japan bought the 50pk. They weren't on sale cost $18.99 but I had a 12% off coupon plus I got the double reward points so i can live with it. Did a search for the logs nothing came up. Isn't there a program that frees up memory. I can't think of the name of the app.(my memory is bad).

Hi Binkie, I downloaded a free trial of Tweak Ram and freed up my resources after turning off the anti-virus,firewall,wifi,internet I was able to have 50% of the ram before opening Nero. Used the new fuji cds and was able to burn successfully!!! :) I will be adding more ram soon hopefully after the holidays or if a really good sale comes up unfortunately I'll have to take out the ram i have now since there are only 2 slots and both are in use.:( 1gb or 2gb i must decide although my wallet will probably make the decision for me. bad enough i have to buy expensive cds.I can promise you the desktop will be the main burner being used for that.the source for the fuji's has lots in stock and always seems to have them. The Walgreens,CVS Stores,Rite-Aid all carry them. Thanks for all your help.I saw in another thread you mentioned your pooch passed on sorry for your loss. I love mine alot and would be devastated if she were gone. One day i hope you find another pup that makes you happy.

    Hi coachop94
    Txs for the kind words!!
Not a problem on the help too.

Those Fuji's you picked up are also more than likely made by Taiyo Yuden. I think your laptop drive will do much better w/ these - whether cd or dvd's. You can also by them online at supermediastore. They run sales w/ free shipping quite a bit.

For the Nero log - is automatically saves them so if you look in path above they should be in there. They are text files.

More ram is always better - I can definitely understand the wallet
    bit :)
    Have a great holiday!!
