hate to break it to you but one its damaged itself via heat you cant fix it yourself....(the chips them selfs can be damaged)
but good luck non the less.

well just so you all know... i'm finally able to use my unit without freezing... FINALLY.

Before I did what I did in the pix below, I did the towel trick for about 45min, and then let the console cool down for plenty of time to ensure the solder was solidified. i did the mods below hours after the towel trick, but i'm sure 20min would have been enough to let the case fully cool down.

It's sloppy, but hey it proves a point since the unit doesn't freeze @ all now.

    The Cooling:
60mm fan on the CPU heatsink. 92x32mm fan on the GPU heatsink. Antec notebook cooler below (you can see USB plug... I just plug it in to turn it on. PSU (Power Supply Unit) has a 4" desk fan at the intake vents. As for the console's DVD Drive, I swapped the stock SATA cable with a PC sata cable (since the stock is a few inches, and I needed something longer). You can see the DVD player is on top of my digital tuner box.11

    ugly as hell, though, right?

it's a shame that this is the only way it works.

last night the console ran 3 hours strong... it hasn't lasted that long in a while. i played GoW w/my brother for about 90min, and then my other brother came home from work and played another 60-90min.

    :)

i'm thinking that the 92x32mm fan on top of the GPU heatsink is overboard, but all i have is that fan in the 92mm size... all of my other fans are high cfm 120mm, regular 120mm, or high and low cfm 80mm.

i may set up two 60mm fans in a push-pull on the CPU heatsink... i think i can make those fit inside the case if i close it up. i feel like the greatest problem is most likely the GPU cooling... it's so low-profile b/c of that damn DVD drive.

i do have all the watercooling gear i need to cool this thing, but i'm hesitant to do so b/c of all of the hard work and modding involved.

if they had an all-copper GPU heatsink with a good heatpipe design, i bet that could fix a lot of problems. does anyone know if there are places selling after-market heatsinks for the 360?

if i do that, i could then cut out the fan grills in the rear of the case, and place higher cfm fans back there. i could run all of this power off of the 4-pin plug next to the rear exhaust fans (i think)... i will check with a DMM if they are 5v or 12v fans... i hope they're 12v fans.

dude the only reason why the outlet is brown becuase of a voltage spike that is the only thing that it could be, there is no core filter for spikes on the 360's power adapter get your self a battery backup.

so when you look up above a few posts and you see the way i'm cooling my xbox 360, you'll ASSUME i won't freeze anymore, right?

WRONG... I went home for lunch to game for 30min and froze right on startup screen... then, got the red light of death AGAIN.

what the...??? i can't cool it any better unless i do finally hook up watercooling to it, but i doubt it'll make a diff... the damn thing doesn't get hot with the fans i'm blasing on it...

what else could it be... a BAD MOUNT from the heatsinks??

you guys think i should try to reseat the heatsinks and put on Arctic Silver 5? I don't wanna go further with this piece of junk if it ain't gonna help.

Any serious input will be appreciated... maybe it's just a bad mount or something... that would explain why some 360s don't have probs (that are same date as mine)...

Ummm ok lets assume it overheated then lets assume it damaged the chips some then guess what happens when a chip is damaged you can not cool it to get it to work the chip itself is damaged.

    i was HOPING i wouldn't hear that...

i do a lot of PC work and overclocking... usually when a chip is damaged from heat or overclocking, it's damaged for good and produces artifacts EVERY SINGLE time... not a random freeze here and there.

    That's what's weird about this... =/

I wonder if I could send in the unit even though the M$ sticker was peeled off... would they just charge me or something?

very, very interesting... but how would i know if that's true... i sure hope it is.

i may have to try it myself. But... my DVD drive is hacked, and unfortunately I've misplaced the original firmware.

Anyone know if there's a way to UNHACK my DVD drive??

Might have to ask in the 360 forum here or a moding forum somewhere or pick up a used 360 drive from ebay for 30$/$50.

Mmm ran across a torrent with these in it

    Firmware_for_Hitachi-LG_47Dv11_Xbox_360_DVD_Drive-iND / 47dv11.rar
    Firmware_for_Hitachi-LG_47Dv11_Xbox_360_DVD_Drive-iND / 47dv11.sfv
    Firmware_for_Hitachi-LG_47Dv11_Xbox_360_DVD_Drive-iND / NFO.nfo
    Firmware_for_Hitachi-LG_47D_Xbox_360_DVD_Drive-iND / 47d.rar
    Firmware_for_Hitachi-LG_47D_Xbox_360_DVD_Drive-iND / 47d.sfv
    Firmware_for_Hitachi-LG_47D_Xbox_360_DVD_Drive-iND / ind.nfo

Well I have two Xbox 360 Premiums (i bought other one to have at my gf's place).

I have the ORIGINAL firmware of my other xbox 360 somewhere... both systems have the same drive, the Samsung Toshiba (newer version)... would I be able to throw the firmware from that onto this one???

I thought each DVD Drive has its own identity... i could be wrong.

ah thos are 60 a pop LOL

but as far as I know (I do not mod the Xbox/360 I can but I have not since I have dodged getting one I do have 2 xboxs tho...1 needs a new PSu tho) anyway from how "I" understand it each type/brand has its own frimware not each drive unit has its own each brand/type.

from what i've gathered, i think the SERIAL # is implemented into the firmware. I hacked both of my 360s and I know I had to enter the serial# in the DOS prompt on my PC... when I was in the middle of hacking the drive.

How do I EDIT my posts... I don't see an option? WTH? =/

while they can tell a moded frimeware apart from a non moded frimware they wont be tracking what drives to what mobo so as long as you have the same version mobos and the same version drives they will work on each other and vice versa.

THE EDIT BUTTON is normally in the upper right hand conner of the message box by link this message link,if you can not see it,go into the forums and the news comment thread and find the post in there its a left over bug from updating it dose not show up a lot much anymore but looking at the comments threw the forum is the ebst bet to find it...wait.....this is not a news comment is it? LOL

oh well upper right conner the lil note pad and pencil.
