My machine is a Dell Dimension 2400, it came with Roxio. When I purchased the Sony burner, it came with Nero. My drive is a SONY DRU-710A. I purchased it in January from newegg and it worked just fine until the last week in May. The drive would not burn DVDs any longer. It still played DVDs, and burned CDs just fine. I kept trying different things and I have a pile of coasters. And yes, I kept setting DMA=ON. Here's what Sony had me do: Removed all software related to the cd/dvd drives on my machine, Real Player, MusicMatch, Nero, Roxio, DVD Shrink and DVDDecrypter. I ran roxiozap, the general-clean tool from nero, and i have downloaded and installed nero 7.6.0.13 master ultra edition version and the nero second update nve-3.1.0.7.exe I purchased a new box of Sony DVD-R They had me install the new firmware, BYX4. They said for me to run the DriveCheck program again. The drive still wouldn't finish the drivecheck program. They told me that it was the software... Now, here I was up and running just fine for several months. Now I'm very hesitant to re-install the Decryptor and Roxio. I would like to continue making backups of my larger DVDs. I've read through a couple of threads here about users with similar problems, and I checked my logfiles (yes, i saved them). They show dma=off. What's up with this? I could have sworn I turned it on and checked that about 25 times. Basically they ended up sending me a new drive. Again, I'm afraid the same thing will happen again. Any and all comments are welcome!
@Laura99, I recommend you to install your Nero, DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter back onto your computer, but "definitely not" ROXIO and InCD if you have them. Roxio and InCD is a pain in the @ss, with that being said; it will conflicts with your other burning programs -- this will cause your backing up process to fail most of the times, and that means "coaster". Additionally, you can check out this link to reset or enable DMA back on - http://www.burstcopy.com/dma/xp/ - if you're using Windows XP. If you follow what to do on the link and failed after rebooting your computer, and your computer still show PIO Mode. Then you need to a) "uninstall" its driver manually, b) reboot your computer again. Then your Windows will "automatically" reinstall the driver for you when you restart windows. To "uninstall" your driver(s), do the following steps, and yes... it won't hurt to uninstall your other dvd-rom drive as well, if you have it on your computer, especially you're showing in PIO Mode now. This will make both of your "dvd-rom drive" and "SONY dvd burner" runs/burns faster or in another word it will be back on "DMA Mode" after Windows reinstall it for you. ((((( To enable DMA back on by "uninstalling" it's driver ))))) A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER", left click on "PROPERTIES" B) left click on "HARDWARE", left click on "DEVICE MANAGER" C) left click on +sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives D) double left click on your DVD burner[SONY DRU] or your dvd-rom drive (do it once at a time and restart once at a time) E) left click on "DRIVER", left click on "UNINSTALL", you will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system", just click "OK", now "SHUTDOWN" or "restart" your computer F) once you restart your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner and install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!! NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "uninstall" it from the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers (A) left click on + sign of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers (B) double left click on either Primary or Secondary IDE Channel (NOTE: you have to know where your "DVD Burner" or "DVD-ROM drive" is installed to what Channel). Usually it's the "Secondary IDE Channel" because your "C: drive or Hard Drive" would be the main aka Primary IDE Channel already. If you're not sure, then you need to check it with "Nero Toolkit" first before you "uninstall" any of them. Once you verify with Nero Toolkit, then you can continue with the next step. (C) click on "DRIVER", "UNINSTALL", "OK" and then "shutdown" or "restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!! (bb) To verify your dvd burner/dvd-rom drivers with Nero: Open up "Nero Ultra" or "StartSmart", click on "Nero Toolkit", then click on "Nero InfoTool" (InfoTool will run and retrieve all drivers), now click on "Configuration" - this should show you where your DVD Burner/DVD-ROM is installed under either Primary or Secondary <--- make good note of that and you're ready to "uninstall" your dvd burner/dvd-rom drivers now. NOTE: I recommend you to use high quality medias such as FUJI/Taiyo Yuden, MAXELL and SONY (make sure it's a 8X DVD+R and it says "MADE IN JAPAN" on the spindle/package box. Another top notch media is "Verbatim", this is one of the high class media in the market now-a-days, and it's as good as Taiyo Yuden/Fuji and Maxell as well. Hope this help you a little and have fun burnings.....
Great advice by alkohol by the way. If you know how to format a hard drive, I think that's what I would do. Fdisk it and start from scratch. Reload windows, firewall, antivirus first then your burning software packages, nero, dvd decrypter , dvd shrink. On faster machines these days this process goes much faster than it took say 3 years ago. I can format load windows and other programs in about an hour. I guess that rapture drive helps alot . Good Luck Spacedust
Thanks for your replies, but maybe i wasn't clear. a) i'm able to burn DVDs with nero since they sent the new drive. b) I did reset the DMA about 25 times. Here's the question: If the properties shows DMA set, why was DMA=off in the log files? c) Have you guys ever heard of a DVD burner with this problem before? Could it really be caused by all the software, and NOT a hardware issue? Thanks, L
first of all, don't listen to what a manufacturer says, they will always blame the software - and look what they did for you - swap the burner out and you still got problems. ah well. i'll give you a quick rundown of why DMA gets turned off shortly when i find it...
and if you're using Nero, i (and others) can solve your problems - post LAST section of your Nero log - it's in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log - but DO NOT posts your serial number which begins with '1A21' or similar (paste it into notepad first for instance)
Hi guys, Since i'm up and running now, I guess maybe it was the drive... I checked the latest log and of course, it says dma=on in all cases! The DMA errors were in the logs from the previous drive. Do you still want those posted?

naw, i meant when you do another burn it would have been nice to see a logfile, but i guess if you're happy for now... don't forget to pop back if you have more problems
