This is avery strange problem that appear when I was trying to burn a dvd which accounts for overscan and letterboxing for widescreen video files on a non-widescreen tv. After a lot of toying with options, I found that using transform filter to shrink the video size and center it while forcing a 4:3 ratio for the screen solved the problem. I applied this filter to all 4 files on the disc and returned the the main title menu editor. However, just before I went to do the final burn, the system locked up as I was doing some final touches on the menu. The system froze, crashed and restarted without any warning. Afterward I restarted I reopened nero to redo the work I'd lost, and it did the same thing, but when I was trying to add in chapters to one of the video files. After several more crashes, I finally managed to get Nero to the burn process, which worked fine. However, ever since this strange crash, when I interact at all with the first movie file in the title list, even just highlighting it, the system crashes. It seems to happen most often when trying to take the file into the "edit movie" tab with the timeline and filter options. It doesn't matter what file I import, I've tried with several, it even does it when only one movie file has been added to the project. I have absolutely no idea what could cause a problem that is this tempermental. Any help would be appreciated...
Finally...after uninstalling/cleaning/reinstalling nero a bunch of times, uninstalling and reinstalling a bunch of different codecs, it turns out that whatever went wrong the first time that started this mess corrupted the video drivers. After removing and reinstalling the nVidia Geforce 6600 drivers, everything's working just fine again. If anyone else suffers this problem, I would make this my first solution attempt and save yourself hours of frustration.
Good information, Thank you. I think I need to open Nero and try this. What a good idea! It sounds like your getting your money's worth out of the program. I wouldn't have thought that no matter how badly Nero crashed that it would cause a problem with the drivers. Is it possible they were already corrupted and caused the initial crash? Nero is invasive though. Cheers, Frank
All of the faq's dealing with overscan involved a bunch of programs, at least one of which would have problems when i tried to run it. If you use Nero to solve the overscan problem, just make sure you uncheck the "fit to screen" checkbox in the transform settings, or it doesn't do anything. I found that a zoom of -5 works nicely. The forced 4:3 ratio is only necessary for widescreen files, and then only if you have a tv/player that doesn't recognize widescreen format And as for the drivers, its quite possible they were screwy beforehand, but I think the crash was probably triggered by nero. There were no problems before the first crash, and afterwards previously working projects suffered the same problem, suggesting that the first crash cause something rather than happened as a symptom of a problem. In either case, things are going smoothly now, and hopefully this will save someone else the time and frustration of trying to figure out what's going on with their system.
