This weird icon has popped up at least twice now in the past 24 hours and i don't know what it is. I don't even know what to google for this. it lookes like a blue siren with two envelopes behind it: I'm running windows firewall, as well as the icons you can clearly see in my system tray. the questionable one is on the left and it only appears for about a minute before it's gone again. in case you don't know what those programs are, it's from the left: unknown, frostwire, trillian, msn, azureus, that sound thing, that removable media thing, ati, and avast antivirus. The only information i was able to collect from the icon was by hovering over it. it just displays that dns address thing, doubleclicking and right clicking on it didn't do anything. I tried looking for it in my task manager, but it was gone before i could find anything. I figured someone on here might know, so i thought i would ask.
hiya, i just did a quick google search, see if this helps - http://www.computing.net/security/wwwboard/forum/15719.html
it seems it's actually avast's email scanner, but it has only appeared when i'm not running any email clients. I ran a beagle/bagel virus removal program and it didn't detect anything, so it can't be the same problem described in that forum. I'm running tcpview now so maybe i can catch it this time to see what program is accessing the mail scanner. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=3fe4ab999d155f7a679ba90f86aaaae0&topic=16854.0
ah well, worth a try..didn't really check that link, was more interested in getting you a bit of info in case it actually was a virus or similar..
in case someone comes across this thread with the same problem, it turns out that avast displays that icon whenever it is scanning traffic that is similar to email. In my case, nothing was wrong. It was just traffic from various p2p applications.
