I personnally prefer Western Digital since that's all I ever owned and it NEVER causes any problems whatsoever! It never slows down, makes clicks, or anything! Did anyone else get such good performance from their drives? There is not much to talk about in this thread but there is things to discuss such as Western Digital's Raptor. I also heard that Maxtor has a faster series of HDD's than the Raptor!! Is this true??!! Ultimately, I like all brands but if they are all EXACTLY THE SAME PRICE then I would go for WD.
What do you mean by "they lost ground"? P.S. I might buy a Seagate 320 GB SATA HDD with 16 MB of Cache. It is on special.
Personally, I've never had a prob with WD drives. Tried a Maxtor once, it was a bit loud for my taste, so I went back to WD. Currently using WD 250GB 16MB Cache SATA... They haven't "lost ground" in my book. [edit] typos, lol
Seagate hard drives suck. They can be counted on to fail when you least expect them to. Maxtor makes the best (at least they used to). I read that Seagate has purchased Maxtor. Say it isn't so! One would hope that Maxtor's reliability will rub off on Seagate products but the opposite can be true also: Seagate's reliability problems may just drag down the reliability of Maxtor's products now that Maxtor is owned by Seagate. Western Digital Is a good brand. Haven't tried Hitachi. Let's hope Seagate doesn't acqure them.
Correct me if I am wrong but Seagate DOES have a 5 year warranty and WD and Maxtor don't! (they have 3 years) It's only Maxtor and Seagate that are on special, so...I really can't choose WD unless I am going to pay much more, but then I wouldn't be buying a HDD, now would I? P.S. Seagate has purchased Maxtor, indeed, and I agree with you, neurokasm, WD has not lost its ground!
each company has its strong areas for ex.. seagate has large capacitys, western digital higher read write speeds, and personally i never buy maxtor hard drives i'v owned 3 of them each broke. maxtor beating wd i doubt it, besides wd will most likly come out with a second generation raptor with high caps, and a sata 3g interface. and i to perfer wd over other brands. but then again seagates can last a very long time i still have a 500mb one with win95 works like new.
Maxtor drives are slightly behind WD and Seagate quality-wise, they're noisier and midly less reliable, but the fact is, hard disks have to be well made to survive. None of those brands are bad, but for me WD and Seagate. I use one of each! Seagates are very quiet, as are WD Caviar SE16s, but not so much their other drives. Samsung also make very good hard disks, don't forget them! Maxtor do make a 15k rpm drive called the Atlas, but they're $800 a piece 74GB SCSI disks, way out of reach for most of us!
I used a 400gb seagate for a month it simply stoped working on tuesday i had a 20gb wd on 1998 and it died last year around november i bought a wd 80gb no prblm at all i have a maxtor diamond 16 160gb its loud alright and produces lots of heat so in MY opinion i would go for wd
