Ok so I'm very new to Wifi and I'm a bit crap at PC's. I just got a linksys wireless g. Set it up no probs ( was doubting it would be easy ) All was ok. Laptop, DS, PSP, 360. But all of a sudden nothing would work. They all connected with the wireless, but the WL is doesn't seem able to connect. I tired setting it up again but no good. All the lights are on ( but no-one is home lol )that should be, even the internet light on it is on. I think i traced it to the wireless not getting an IP address. When ever I try the laptop it say it say's it's not able to find one. and that I only got limited connection. Can some one help a complete noob. As I said I think it's down to the WL not getting IP address. Do I need to contact the idiots at BT at a huge cost per minute on the phone?
Try going to the router control panel (192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0 or 192.168.0.1 usually, if none of those work in internet explorer, look in the manual) then at the login box, try "admin, password" or "admin, admin" - again if neither work look in the manual. Somewhere in your control panel there will be a system log (guess where to look if you cant find it lol). What you should be looking for are any messages that look like problems. "DSL carrier is down" is bad, unless followed by "DSL carrier is up/ready". If it sits at "connecting PPP0" then thats a problem, or if it says "CHAP authentication failed" or similar, then there's an issue there. However, it says connected and lists some IP addresses then the connection is good. If the list stops at one of those earlier messages after waiting a minute or so, then yes you need to contact your ISP (hey, you could have it worse, UKOnline took 43 minutes to answer the phone last time, and 150 the time before). However, it may also be prudent to phone up Linksys. Usually manufacturers of broadband gear aren't too busy because most calls go to the ISPs instead. They're also probably more knowledgable, we are dealing with BT here...
OK cheers. We'll i tried playing with all sort of settings for connecting on internet on my laptop ( the only way of setting up with what came with the wireless ). NOt got what a clue what I did but it's now up and running!! Thank you for your help though. I never new about the IP address that you gave me so at least if I new some info and settings etc I know where to look.
