    Hey
I haven’t been able to burn anything for 2 weeks. Data disc, much less a DVD. I do have a nice collection of Frisbees. What’s a girl to do?
    Kyo

    Things I have tried:
    1 Nero cleaning tool
    2 Package 1 (6.6.1.4)
    3 Package 2 (3.1.0.21)
    4 firmware update
    5 tried different media
    6 uninstall reinstall (many times)

    :(

    Hello.

Fixation errors usually indicate either a bad burner or media the burner doesn't like. However, there's also a communication error which may have contributed to and caused the fixation error.

You've done many troubleshooting steps already. I will tell you to stay away from Nero 6.6.1.4. Nero 6.6.0.18 is the best Nero version by far imo. And you already know to run the Nero 6 Clean Tool any time before you install.

Have you tried using any other burning program other than Nero to verify that the burner works? Windows Media Player will burn CDs.

You might try shutting down, opening your case, and uncabling both the comm cable and the power cable to your burner. Then restart a couple of times before shutting down and recabling.

Let us know how you make out.

    Hey
Something I noticed. After that firmware update failed. My computer no longer sees my burner. At least before I could play CDs. Somehow you have disconnected my drive. Now what?
    Kyo

    Things I have tried:
    1 Nero cleaning tool
    2 Package 1 (6.6.1.4)
    3 Package 2 (3.1.0.21)
    4 firmware update
    5 tried different media
    6 uninstall reinstall (many times)

Well seeing how the Firmware update failed, your DVD burner is pretty much 'dead'. Windows isnt seeing it cause its not responding/acknowledging being there. I 'killed' a BenQ DVD RW awhile back after the firmware update failed, ended up having to resort to send it out to professionally done to get it working again.

Try running the firmware update tool/utility again, it might see your drive even tho your computer isnt. Does your BIOS see the drive by anyc chance? If your BIOS sees it, drive isnt a total loss

I had trouble with a sony DRU 500a. If I remember right, had to deselect DMA transfer mode before upgrading the firmware, it was a bit of a pain but it upgraded in the end. But hey it would still not burn certain media. So I then flashed the drive with an unofficial firmware and bang everything worked ( changed the drive name to L10 or something ). Was able to burn all types of media but loads and loads of shit quality discs after burn. The drive eventually displayed the same symtoms as yours and disconecting everything and reverting back to original official bios done the trick.

    Hey
OK, I had to reboot to get it to see the burner. The burner is not the problem. I actually went out and got a new burner. Same Sony brand. I guess I should try Roxco?
