I am sure that this has been requested before but I think this could be a really good idea. If each thread stated the number of views then it would give posters and AfterDawn members feedback of which thread titles work and where all the action is. I know we can already see the number of posts in each particular thread but I think number of views could also be very important. I have started a few threads that are designed purely to help people and I know there are many others that have done the same thing. By seeing the number of views on a thread will give us feedback so we know if it is obtaining the desired result. Anyone else think this could be a good addition?
Personally, I don't see the point. If a thread is titled properly, then a contributing member is going to answer your post either way - thread views don't really come into play. The only way I can see this being used is by people that want bragging rights about how many people have viewed their thread in the safety valve. JM2C
I am not referring to safety valve threads. I never post there. I was referring to threads that are started purely from an educational stand point. Thanks for your input anyway.
This has been requested before and there are three reasons why this haven't been implemented: 1) The old threads would get unjust treatment, as they would have to start from zero too. 2) How to measure when a thread is viewed? -If a thread has, say 3 pages, and user lands from Google to page 2, is that a view? (and assuming he/she doesn't load any other pages, but leaves then) -If user loads a page 1, that's a view right? But if the user then goes to page 2 of the same thread, is that a view too? -If user views a X thread page, goes to another thread and returns back to the X thread, does that count as two views for thread X? -If user hits refresh 100 times in a row for certain page, does that count as 100 views? 3) Servers would die -currently, if a user is not logged in and views a thread, that page load is most of the times straight from the cache, thus database doesn't need to work at all. Add view calculator there and each and every page would have to make updates to the database (for the view counter), thus adding extra 300,000 - 500,000 database updates per day.
Don't take me wrong tho Feedback and ideas are always good and this idea is also "would be nice to have". I just want to reply to all feature requests and be honest whether they're likely to be implemented or not and if not, why not
