I downloaded my first AVI file, and it wouldnt play, so i did a little reading, found out about these codecs and all. Then i tried one after the other after the other. And i CANNOT find a method of playing this video, so far...this is what HASN'T worked:
    XviD
    FFDSHOW
    VLC Player
    DivX Player
    DivX Total Pack

Now, i dont know a lot about these things, but these were the programs that this site recommended and i cant seem to get this movie to play. Is there something i need to do after opening the installation file? Anything im missing?

    Download and run GSpot.
Drag the AVI file onto the window and find out what codec it uses and if it is installed on your PC.
If the codecs are installed on the PC, then pressing button 1 followed by button 2 will run the video.

In the case of VLC, it uses internal filters(as opposed to codecs that are installed and registered on your PC)to display the video.
