I still have not purchased another external burner, there are no BenQ's available in Canada except the 1650 which the NCIX outlet did not recommend to put in an enclosure. So now I am asking what is the best auto bit setting external burner. We have Sony, Lacie, HP, LG, Comstar and Retail Plus Burners at the stores that I have been to, however the sales reps don't even know what auto bit setting and BenQ's Book Management DVD ROM exe. is all about. I did some research with Sony and was advised that their drx 810 ul which has both firewire and usb 2 connectivity and their recent drx 820 u which is only usb are supposed to be automatic bit setting for R+ media, however the only media they have tested and recommend is Sony, TDK and Verbatim. They said that in their testing there were issues with R+ Maxell, Fuji, and Imation and that it had to do with the dye in the blank discs. Thought I would post here and see if I can get any comments on this specific question. The stores tell me that their best seller is the Sony and I have been out searching the stores yesterday and have noticed that between yesterday and today that the Sony is down from say 6 to 2 or 3 left. I was looking at the LG, however last November I had bought one and had problems with compatability with some of the standalone burners in our family and so I think I will likely forget about that brand. Besides the model that they carry here is $200 cdn and is a 16X Light Scribe GSA - E10L. I look forward to comments, thankyou. BTW, there is a brand by the name of Comstar available too however I have not heard of it. Regards
Hi- I have the Sony DRU-820a. It is an internal model. I believe I saw an external model available the last time I went to Best Buy. My Sony model is a rebadged BenQ. It does bitset/booktype + media to be read as DVD-Rom. I used Nero CD-DVD Speed (free download if you don't have Nero itself) to select my settings. Very simple, one time selection. Have been very pleased with my Sony. It replaced my DVD player that came on the computer when that player died. Install was simple, no problems. Flashed to the latest firmware, no problems. Have been using several brands of disks w/o problems. Staples house brand and Sony (made by TY) disks. Not a coaster in sight. They also work in my stand alone DVD player on my TV. I am a happy camper. I would feel confident recommending the Sony external model to you. I would look at Best Buy or Newegg for new units. Only problem I can forsee is: Do they ship to Canada? I would not know that bit of info. Good luck.
well....... Meriteline.com ships to Canada!! here is my BenQ LS 1655 in an external case: http://www.meritline.com/combo-benq-dw1655-and-galaxy-5-25-enclosure.html it works great and download the QSuite from the website and enjoy! Use it on USB.... for some reason the firewire won't work for me! but I love it! enjoy.
@Appa, Costco has external LiteOns SHM-165P6SX for $89 CAD. I believe it is the same as SHM-165P6S in an external enclosure. I've looked for reviews, but have found nothing. These bitset, but not sure if auto. NOT Lightscribe. One thing about Costco, if you are not satisfied with their products, just return. TigerDirect Canada has Plextor External's: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1544661&Sku=P67-1224 I have ordered through TigerDirect for my son, it was okay, but the service from NCIX is much better. IHoe......OOHLALA, very NICE!!! I want one of them! @appa I found this site.....no idea if the company is okay. The prices are fairly reasonable and seem to have what you are looking for: http://btecanada.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=78_278&osCsid=b51bd422e4e3f674250536a7f27feab2
I was browsing through the options on the Nero 6.6.0.6 that came with the Nero drx ul, I haven't flashed it yet but see there is one available. Being a Newb I am confused. I see that Nero under options shows that there is a selection for DVD-ROM which I would assume is like my BenQ 162I Book Management Q Suite that is talked about?? I did not install any of the BenQ software at their Phone support Tech Advice. They simply sent me the Book Management exe. in the mail. The only program that I installed was their OEM version of Nero that I mentioned earlier and I didn't even know there was an option to select DVD-ROM to burn to. Actually with my BenQ I simply used One Click Dvd or Clone DVD from Sly soft and Any DVD if it was necessary. I did not install InCD at the advice again of the phone tech support and did burn CD's with Nero without that feature and QSuite. I hope that someone can explain in laymans terms what those 2 items are. I have 30days to try out this 810 ul and I wondered if the user who said the firewire did not work had flashed to the next firmware? There is also another brand available Comstar which the sales rep said today is an LG, however I don't see mention of it on the googling that I did. Apparently according to Sony the next model that will be out in a few months will be the drx 830U and it will replace the drx 810 UL. I thought the firewire would be good for transfer of my mini dv, however if it does not work I shouldn't be paying for the option. I will unbox it tomorrow and see. I would again appreciate comments, thankyou. BTW, I thought that it was interesting about the media being used as Sony said only use R+ Sony, TDK and Verbtim and that there were dye problems with BenQ, fuji and Imation?? This is why I like to hear from end users and appreciate very much that you take the time to respond. Thankyou
If I click under the options in Nero for DVD-ROM for the Sony is that all that I will have to do?? And then my R+ media will burn in DVD-ROM????
I don't actually use Nero that much, so I am not sure where you are referring to. I did use Nero CD DVD Speed to set my book type (one time) and now do not need to worry about it. CD DVD Speed should have come with your Nero. If not, you can download it here for free: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/ Open CD DVD Speed, be sure to select your burner on the pull down, click Extra, click Bitsetting, and follow the dialog box. It should be pretty straight forward at this point. Enjoy!
Hey, if you have Nero 6.6.0.6 I recommend upgrading to .18. Seem to be a lot of stability problems with certain versions. Package 1 http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe Package 2 http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe
if you're going to go from 6.6.0.6 to 6.6.0.18 then make sure you uninstall and run the cleaning tools first before you install the .18 version. http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Clean_Tools.html
Any comments on Nero Ultra 7 Edition??? Is it buggy too, just wondering how it compares to the .18 that was suggested as my bro has a spare packaged copy that he got from work and it is just sitting on his desk catching dust??? I appreciate your experienced comments, thx
the stable version of Nero 7 is 7.0.8.2 and you can download it here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_7_premium/?845
So I should scrap opening my bro's copy of Nero Ultra 7??? Nero really confuses me with the changes and all of the comments, thx and I hope there will be a follow-up to this question. Ciao for now!!!
Nero just had a new update on version 7.....I don't know if that's buggy or not...... you can try the Ultra 7 then do an update on it and try the new version that just came out not too long ago. good luck.
