OK total newb question here so my apologies. I want to get a good quality capture device/card for my pc. I dont care if it is internal or external I just want something that isnt overly expensive but at the same time isnt crap. this will be mainly for converting home movies from camcorder/vcr. I am in the US and running windows 2000.
    Thanks for help

How about an ATI tv wonder. I have one they're pretty good. Capture using VirtualDub or the software provided so doesent cost you anything.
Or maybe a hauppauge WintTv card, though you cannot capture in avi with them but in mpeg2 since the come with a mpeg2 hardware decoder. So if you ever decided to get xp media center you could use the hauppauge card with that as a tv tuner.

Don't forget if you have a digital camcorder you can use it to record from the vcr. Now all you have to do is import the dgital video from the camcorder to a $9 DV PCI card.

I would not use USB I would use a $9 DV PCI Card (internal). But if you are forced to use analog and a USB I would go with internal. Now remember this is just my preference
