I'd like to get a dvd burner and keep it around the $30 range. I don't know exactly what I should look for in a burner, I started reading a bunch of threads here, and started getting a headache.... I thought it was pretty straight forward, but then I was reading about media compatabilities, DL, and book?something-or-other....I'd heard good things about the NEC 3550A, but they seem to be extremely hard to come by for some reason (the only site I've found that I can find one on is newegg, and they're out of stock).... Here's a few I selected, but again, I don't feel like I know exactly what I need to look for, and I couldn't tell you the differences between them....especially the two lite on models, to me they're identical...thanks for any and all help....

    Lite-On Model SHW-160P6S-04

    Lite-On Model SHM-165P6S

    LG Model GSAH22N-BK

    NEC Model 7170A-0B

    Hi Dubu
LiteOn fan here so guess what my pick is :)

The diff between the 2 LiteOn's is 165P6S has burning to a dvd-ram disc (don't need). The 160PS6 does not.

The latter 2 - go to 18x but don't booktype. LiteOn also has an 18x speed model. Since 18x media is not on the market at this point kinda a moot point. But both of those drives are good too.
Booktyping is good for +R on older dvd players. You can booktype it to dvd-rom to make it more compatible.

Just my 2 cnets but I'd go with the LiteOn - SHW-160P6S (I also happen to have one too!)

Thanks for the help, binkie7....I have a few more questions if you don't mind....
    1) What is booktyping?
    2) What is dvd-ram?
    3) What do you think about the the LiteOn with LightScribe (165H6S - I couldn't find a 160 with lightscribe)?

    Thanks again for the help

Well, my wife gave me the drive as soon as it arrived, claiming she couldn't make me wait 2½ weeks knowing I wanted it so bad.....I love it... the only difficulty was with Nero 7 and lightscribe, but after a few searches of the forum here and a lot of uninstalls and reinstalls, I was able to get it working. So far no coasters, gotta love that! Any ways, thanks again for the help, and hopefully after reading a few guides and burning a bunch of stuff myself, I'll be able to help out others here as well.....
