I've had Fuji, Sony & Olympus, now using a Canon 350D.
I certainly won’t be using another make from now on.

The quality is first class, and the startup speed is almost unreal, literally switch it on a take a picture.

Obviously different models have different qualities, but in portrait mode, it will take full quality pictures with flash at a sustained rate of about 3 per 2 seconds.

Deliberately kept away from Nikon, due to the consistent poor feedback on their customer service, or lack of it.

I am a sports photographer. When I went digital I found that the only digital camera that was quick enough, no lag time, was the Nikon d2h. With the nikor 70-200 ed vr lens I got outstanding results. Since then nikon has come out with the d2x. It's an even more outstanding camera and with time (when the price goes down) I will add that camera to my outfit.
I also have the Nikon d70, bought after the d2h. It's a nice still camera but has a lag time for sporting events. Compensations have to be made to include it's deficiencies to get the shot at the appropriate time. It takes great shots.
I compared the Nikon d2h to Canon's best digital camera about a year ago and found that Nikon could not be beat on response time. Although I feel that Canon has cornered the market on professional digital cameras, Nikon has their foot in the door on the sports digital slr's. Thank you, Rita Bruner www.thepictureladyphotos.com

In the olden days Canon made Shutter speed priority cameras & Nikon made aperture priority cameras, so most sports photographers used Canon, & others used Nikon. That is probably why Canon have the edge with sports cameras. I learnt with a Nikkormat FTn, then progressed to a Nikkormat ELW! Looking to buy a digi camera, I like the Nikon D50 or D70, but I have heard that Nikon customer service is not as good as it used to be.

I want a Nikon, but I really do not know what to do!!

This is the second time I have heard someone write that Nikon has customer service problems.
Let me tell you a story. Nikon had made this camera, d2h, and made sports photographers all over the world happy. It soon became apparent that the d2h was flawed (internal metering problems) and would need to be fixed. They (Nikon) made the sacrifice of putting that information on their website and asked the new owners to voluntarily send in their cameras to be repaired, free of charge.

I got my d2h in the late spring of 2004. When this information became public knowledge, I do not know. I became aware sometime in the spring of 2005. Like a foolish person I didn't send it in at my dead period (August) until I had absolutely no other choice. And was completely out of time. It happened last October. Was at a racing event, taking pictures, when the camera went all white, or all dark, or everything in between. Called Nikon right away and was told that they would expediate the camera thru since I had a large dog show to photograph that next weekend. Sent the camera to Nikon next day delivery with insurance to cover rebuying if needed to, and also purchased the next day return for them to put on the box after repairs were complete for a total of $104. Thursday I called and was told that the camera would leave out that day. But it seems that they had lost the prepaid shipping label and was mailing it 3 day UPS. At this time I was really desperate to talk to someone in charge. And I did. Told her the story she called down to the shipping dock recalled my camera, told the guys to change delivery to next day. No problems, except the next day, Friday, no camera. Called that nice lady back and she put an all out search on my camera. Told me that if I didn't get it back in time she would send me a refurbished camera to use.
Seems the camera got stuck on the shipping dock, same 3 day delivery label on it. She told me that she repacked it herself, (she was furious with her delivery dock) put next day delivery to the dog show arena for Saturday morning delivery. She did, it came and I had a great weekend.
OOH! I left the somewhat good/bad part out. Just knowing my camera wasn't going to come in on time I went out and bought the Nikon D70. It immediately took a chunk out of my weekend proceeds. But I learned a valuable lesson from all this. NEVER leave yourself with just 1 camera. Always have a back-up! Now I do. And I have faith that miracles do happen and it's all thanks to Nikon. And I won't procrastinate next time when I need to send my camera in for repairs, whatever the reason.

Sorry it took so long to tell this story, but I felt it was important for you and others who might read this, to know that there are real people who work at these Big Corporate giants and they are human.
And I am saving up for the D2X. I can hardly wait!

    Thank you, Rita

Nice to hear a good(ish) story, I take it you in the States, I'm in the UK. Still not sure what to do though! The Canon EOS seems to be reasonably well thought of. But I just like Nikon! Not sure whether the D70 is worth the extra expense, I do like to be in total control where Photos are concerned.
My stepfather is a keen digi photographer. He used to make all his own chemicals for processing etc, the effects were astounding. I learnt about RAW mode from him. He also says that celluloid cameras are better for B&W. I much prefer B&W to colour.
Ansel Adams work is unparalleled, even today.
I do like the ease of just plugging your camera into your PC, then printing off copies, easy peasy!
Not too bothered about cost, I just want a reliable, solid camera. I like Nikon lenses too, not sure about Canon though!

Yeah, I shared your concern at one time. Before I got my D2H. But then it was simply finding the best sports camera on the market at that time. I still feel that the Nikon D2H or and D2X are unbeatable for what they were made for. As far as researching the perfect still camera and buying it, I really do like the D70. It's lightweight but professional all the way thru. The average consumer would definitely find near perfection with this unit. The 6 megapixels it offers is a respectable size that gives a bang for the bucks. It's higher than most private consumers pay for those regular retail units usually sold at Wolf Camera, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. And at one time I would have looked over that camera as not having the umph, I needed in a professional camera. I believe I made the right choice. Used it for X-Mas with the family. Took quite a lot of pics and later that day replayed them back on the family Television. It made a huge splash. Would do it all again. Only regret is that I waited so long to get a mid-range digital still camera.

Well, I think that a D70 is order of the day. Will have to get a nice big Nikkor zoom to compliment it with! Thank you for your input, much appreciated!

    Just seen how much a D2h is - [bold]HOLY CRAP!![/bold]

Mind you, if you want quality....

Lol, that's wonderful to hear, at least for Nikon it is. I have 2 lens. Each one is a Nikkor lens. When I first bought the D2H I knew that I would need a good, fast lens for the sports I shoot. So, I researched and found that Nikkor sold a 70-200mm. It's the AF-S VR-NIKKOR 70-200mm 2.8 G. And what a horse of a lens it is to. Or I should say a work horse. My 2nd lens I got just last summer is the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm 3.5-5.6 G. This is a vibration reduction lens as well. They both have paid for theirselves many times over. Not just the photo sales I have attained since purchasing my unit but in the quality of each photo.
Ipurchased everything from the same company in Ohio, USA, Cord Camera. They sell on ebay as well. If you can't find a competitive price at home I will send you the information for the company I purchased from. They beat the competators price. I told them what I could get it for and could they beat it. They did and I did. I buy from them exclusively now. Thanks, Rita

    A D70 & an 18-70 (Not sure of the F-stops) lens is over £700, I fancy the 70-300,

that's another few hundred! I do like quality, & I really don't mind paying for it! It would only take 3 months for me to pay for that little lot! (I have a lot of disposable income!) A 2X converter would not go amiss too!
It has rave reviews everywhere I read, Your comment, "I wish I'd got it earlier" was the clincher for me.
I was a Mech Engineer for 17 yrs, many of those were also spent taking photos & in the darkroom! I do miss it at times. I appreciate that you have to spend money to get the best. I spent a fortune on Snap-On tools, but everytime you use them it is a pleasure. Rather like photography, nice camera, nice to use!

The 2x converter would make my wildlife photos more exciting, to say the least. I am only confused as to which 2x I would need. Nikon offers 2. But which one would benefit my setup?

The choices you have made will make you a very happy person.

Good luck and keep me posted as to what you get and how you like it. I really am interested in what you think.

    Sincerely, Rita

I think Nikon offer a 1.5X & a 2X converter. I would personally go for the 2X. With a 300MM lens you get the same magnification as a pair of 10X50 Binoculars! Very handy for wildlife. Also if you use a monopod, as opposed to a tripod, they are a lot smaller & lighter! My fave for a steady shot is to lean against a tree or something similar!

Just noticed that you say Nikon has 2 2X converters, do you have a link for me, I am having trouble getting on the Nikon site! I think they also made 2 types for the SLRs, I think one was of superior quality & you did not loose too many F stops as the cheaper version. The problem is that it is that long ago I cannot remember!

    Here is a link I found for Nikon reviews;

I believe that Nikon has 2 2x but I could be wrong. Their site for the usa is www.nikonusa.com . Hope that helps. I have a minolta 2x for sale on ebay but it wasn't that wonderful. Needed a 2.8 or better (if they make one). But that one won't help me now as it certainly didn't then. Paid a lot of money for that one. Used it on my 80-300mm lens (a cheap lens at that even new, less than $300).
The pics were too dark. Lost a bit of resolution. Thought I was getting a good thing, to increase my power. Anyway off that subject.

I've had a Canon Powershot G3 for a few years now and I have been happy with it. My friend had a G2 which I also used and that influenced my decision in purchasing the G3. I'm now looking to upgrade to the Powershot Pro1 sometime later this year. In a nutshell, I'd highly recommend Canon products
