I have had a lot of different attitudes to spiders over the years. When i was about 12 the girl next door had a big black spider she kept as a pet in a matchbox and i used to let it run all over my hand and arm and it didn't bother me at all, i quite liked her spider and even considered getting one for myself! lol! Then i kind of had no interest in them for a long time, they didn't bother me one way or another but when i got pregnant with my first child it was like a switch flipped in my brain or something and suddenly i was terrified of them. If there was a spider in the room i went hysterical and had to get my hubby to get rid of it. Even if it was a tiny little thing! That went on for about 8 years until both my kids were over the age of 5 and then gradually spiders stopped bothering me again. I could even watch Arachnaphobia! Now i don't mind them, but it's been raining here for the last few weeks and my computer is in the attic, so suddenly all these spiders are appearing. There was one running across my computer desk there a few minutes ago! They always seem to come in when it's wet. I know in Ireland we don't get poisonous spiders or snakes so we're lucky, but I was reading somewhere that on average, people swallow 3 - 5 spiders (can't really remember figure but something like that) a year in their sleep. So when you wake up after a night on the beer and there's a horrible taste in your mouth, maybe it wasn't the beer! lol! Anyone else got an opinion on spiders?
I like them. As a predatory hunter they provide a useful service ridding my environment of offensive things like flies and moths. I leave them be as they do me no harm at all. I grew up in the country so I have no fear of them. Though it may be cruel to the spider I like to catch them and scare people by presenting them with one once in a while from an unexpected place. There is nothing better than seeing the pure panic on some big hairy hard man's face when he thinks you have picked up a spider and are heading towards him with hand outstretched.. Girlpower rules... Priceless...
Well I for one am terrified of them, I can't explain why, just am. Funny thing is though my brother had a Tarantula when we we're both kids and I thought it was the coolest thing ever at the time. I do not kill spiders thought, I just leave em be. Thanks for the info Evastar, I guess I'll sleep with a particle mask on now. LOL
There are a few spiders, Black widow, Brown Recluse and Fiddleback Spiders, these won't kill you, but will make you very ill. As for the snakes the only one I know of is the Mississuaga rattler, but as long as you don't annoy it, it will leave you alone, They are very shy from what I hear.
