    Pioneer is one of the best. Your 109 is a keeper.

    my sony DRU-510A has been very, very good to me, but is getting to slow. i'll be replacing it with a Plextor soon, i think, and putting it in my Linux box. :)

    I, like Flip, like my Plextor PX-716A. I just wish DL media would drop in price.

    LOL~ flip you crack me up~ anyways, i have all of the aforementioned drives, minus the infamous plextor, which i hear is TERRIFIC~ :) that is next on my list once my other 4 drives on various desktops die~

    the pioneer dvr-109 is currently my favorite, a very good drive in my opinion, while i DO use the sony 710a on ocassion~ :p

    I'm from another Forum, and all they talk about there is the NEC 3520A. You can easily get "Modified" firmware for this drive that sets "Bitsetting", removes "Riplock", and RCP1. This modified FW opens this drive up, and I guess that's what people love about it. I guarantee...if you do a google search for the NEC 3520A, you'll pull up 100 pages. Everyone raises the roof about this burner!!!!

    hmmm I have to look into plextor and nec. I did a search and failed to get a sufficient answer. Anyone know if nu tech makes a quality burner? Unfortunately I am in a place currently that does not sell any stand alone burners except nu tech brand.

    @matt72:
    since newegg.com can sell NEC 3520A for approx $50 including shipping, you shouldn't care what brands local merchants sell. They wouldn't be able to match that price anyway. Black, silver, beige faceplates all available, with or without worthless lite burning software; The NEC 3520A is the best deal going for a quality burner at rock bottom price.

    I have both the Plextor 716 and the NEC 3520 and I prefer the Plextor. Rip speeds are 10 minutes with the Plextor and 19-20 minutes with the NEC, and yes that is with the hacked firmware 304. But for $50, thats hard to beat

    The correct hacked FW for the NEC 3520A is "1UF"....NOT 304. No wonder you got those speeds. Go here.......http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/
    to download and install the correct one.

    Trust me it's hacked, Riplock, region free, book type to dvd-rom. The 3520 can only rip a dvd-9 at about 5x. With Riplock removed it gets to about 7x. Did even read your link? 1_UF.ZIP (based on I-O Data 3.04)

    If you wanna know which is potenially faster between the NEC w/ hacked firmare or Plextor 716 w/ updated firmware ... check the DMA.

    Which has the faster transfer rate?
