My Sony DVD player says it will play DIVX files provided they are in ISO 9660 level1/level 2 or joliet format. I have tried creating a data CD and a Data DVD but neither play.

How do I find out what format my saved avi files are ? And should I be burning a video CD , which the Sony manual says it will accept ?

    Any help much appreciated

    Thanks Attar...GSpot...well...hits the spot.

It tells me the file is XviD 1.2 SMP....

Now for the really dumb question. What CD do I create...I'm guessing the only option is a data Cd ? The Sony manual says nothing about the burning option just that it plays Divx files

Simply burning a 'Data CD' (or DVD if the file is too large) with the likes of Nero or IMGBurn should produce a playable disk.
The only other possibility is that in fact the player is looking for the 'DivX' in the file header (ignoring the XviD).
I think that you could test that by having a friend play the disk on their standalone unit.

Thats sounds about right, cheers again Attar. The actual file name is

    Heroes.S02E02.HDTV.XviD-XOR.avi

I wonder if I change the file extension from avi to DivX it might work. Mind you I've not actually burnt a data CD with this particular file so I might just give it a go and see what happens

I would try changing the name to movie.avi - just in case the player cannot accept long file names, but don't change it to .divx

You know that could well have been the problem with previous, similar, files that wouldn't play. They have all had the multiple . in the name

    Heroes.S02E02.HDTV.XviD-XOR.avi

Has four...now thats gotta confuse a simple device like a DVD player which, as you say, is probably expecting a movie.avi type file name.

Many thanks again.....I'll give it a go tomorrow....
