This laptop right out of the window. Guys help me again please.... So many of you have in the last month or more that i have been a member and thank you but here it goes again...So i got the computer running good. It was a little sluggish but all major kinks seemed to be out. Well i read several people here say nortons was a resource hog so i uninstalled it. Well now the computer runs good but i can not load system information i click it and nothing comes up. Nor can i load any system access information, system restore, user accounts, system services somewhat only on the general tab and not extended. Guys what is wrong now?? Can someone please tell me. There is no apparent spyware or viruses that my pc tools found. Pc tools registy repair says everything is fine. But maybe i accidentally deleted something important when i was taking nortons off. please help thanks again.

P.S.= Before this gets moved to nortons forum i did not put it there because i do not feel like it is a nortons problem i feel like it is a Jonathan mistake (meaning me) because it seems as though something is disabled or deleted and i cannot seem to find it. So i apologize if the moderator disagrees but i dont make a habit of posting in the wrong forum i may be a newbie but i try to obey and respect you guys rules. Thanks again

Do you mean you deleted files or registry keys?

Have you run Check Disk to make sure no system files are missing or corrupt? (Start > Run > type chkdsk)

i deleted files. For instance nortons seemed to be interfearing with the new antivirus software and then i noticed all though it was uninstalled it was still there like in the the file CCAPP, and it was still on my IE toolbar as if it was still enabled. So i went it to regedit and searched for "Nortons" and "Symantec" and deleted every file because i wanted nortons out. I have a feeling you maybe shaking your head at me because this was probally a mad move? No i have not tried the check disk, never heard of that through run. Is that the same thing as error check in my computer on the C drive properties? I did do the sfc /scannow run command is this the same thing as what you are suggesting? Thanks for your help,
    Jonathan

Yeah, Norton is an ass when it comes to uninstalling. There is a tool you can download from their site that will give you complete removal. If you still need I can give you the link.

I'm only shaking my head because I'm assuming you didn't make a backup before deleting keys. Then again, I'm only assuming. :) Number 1 rule when in the registry: Always make a backup before editing or removing anything. (File > Export > save the .reg somewhere) If something goes wrong or most commonly, slows down, you can open the .reg file and merge it with the registry.

No, I'm not talking about System File Checker. SFC only checks 'protected' system files. I'm speaking of Check Disk. It checks to make sure there are no missing or corrupt system files. Run it and see if anything gets replaced.

Go to Run > type chkdsk > click OK.
It will tell you if anything is being replaced or if anything is corrupt.
Usually, Check Disk will replace or repair the files, but sometimes if a file cannot be recovered you will need to do a repair install of Windows.

If Check Disk doesn't help anything you may have to do a repair install. Just insert your Windows disc and restart. You will be prompted to press any key to boot from the disc, do so. Then, when prompted press 'R' to do a repair install.

Guessed wrong! thanks for your help..the check you suggested did not work. it did not show anything wrong. So i will go to step to and try to find my windows cd so i can do the repair install. Thanks again.

    Niobis,
Running chchdisk will only check your harddisk for errors, not missing files.

    less10,
Try performnig a 'repair install' in windows XP.

Thanks again to the both of you. I could not find my back up cd that came with the laptop. I found the clear case with the number on it but no cd. So... I made a few backup disc of my personal files and booted from the d:/ and restored factory settings which sucked because i had no idea how many updates and BS i was going to go through. But it is done. Thanks again..Bye the way i know again that this is not the nortons forum but while i have you guys trying to help me, after i have rebooted i ran nortons uninstaller from there website and all signs are that it is gone. I have done search in registy and found nothing but my new antivirus says i need to uninstall nortons antivirus. I cant find it anywhere else to delete it. Any thoughts on how to find a program?

Actually, chkdsk ALSO fixes errors in the windows filesystem, Ashwin 18, NOT just disc errors
@ less10 : try downloading Ccleaner to remove the last traces of norton...
though after a clean reinstall, there should be no trace left of Norton.

I know, but what's that got to do with this thread? CHKDSK cannot recover missing files, can it?
