me if not using the computer than is shut down. been doing this method for over 20yrs without a problem plus also the cost of electricity.
so if i'm going to bed...i should turn off??? (I live on a college campus~) And leave on during the day??? If i turn off and turn on every other hour will that affect my computer?
I leave mine on 24/7 it runs my website my excuse is that it helps to lessen chip creak chip creak is like metal fatigue if you heat up and cool metal enough it gets weaker but apart from the cost of running it shouldn't harm the pc to leave it on just set drives etc. to shut down after 30 minutes
failure by on/off is inconsequential if you're keeping the PC for less than about 5 years. It just doesn't happen often enough. Unless you're downloading, you want your PC off when you're not using it. If a PC uses 400W of electricity (low by games machine standards) then leaving it on 24/7 wastes probably about 10 hours a day and hence 70 hours a week. Therefore, every year you waste nearly 1500 units of electricity. At a price of say 10p (okay pence where we are) that's £150 or $270. Quite a sizeable waste of energy.
computers only use the electric they need mostly it's far less than 400watts even when playing games I would think that on tickover it uses less than a 100watt lamp
uh uh. A basic system will have a maximum power draw of about 150W, so an idle power draw of about 75-80. PSUs are also not 100% efficient, so youre looking at above 100W for all cases. Then there's gaming. I wouldn't mind betting I draw over 400W when I'm gaming, at least 400.
i'm glad that i'm on a college campus! I don't have to wry about any of that stuff. I guess i'll keep in on during the day and off during the nights. just another thing, is there a different performance bettern a computer that shuts off at nights vs. a computer who hasn't been turned off for about 3 months? 6 months? 1 yr? etc...
even when mine is on for days at a time it still gets restarted a few times i would think after a month it would grind to a standstill with all the tiny bits of files it creates and then doesn't dump properly so i got to say the one that gets turned off would be the fastest
Bear in mind, a computer that's on 24/7 is a computer that's vulnerable to attacks, viruses etc. 24/7, and if you ain't there to stop them, they could get in.
Also, why not just put in stand by. That way it uses very little energy while you are away and you don't have to worry about booting it back up when you get home(And it saves what ever you are working on at the time without closing the program out). I have been doing this with my computer for the last 3+ years.It keeps my computer healthy(free from viruses and CPU damage)and keeps the electric bill down too . Hope this helps, Chris
I prefer to hibernate, that way you genuinely use no more electricity than when off (not none of course, that BIOS charger and power recognition chip is still going) and those RAM chips won't like going 24 hours a day for however many years.
lol you are all right of course i forget that i rarely have a computer more than six months so i don't tend to think about it actually wearing out but I keep the hard drives when i upgrade and i have them all on turn off after 30 mins cost of electric never bothered me much cos in this house the lights are on all day regardless and so are all the computers AND our electric bill is only around £750 a year and yes I moan every time a bill pops through the door
