honestly if your picky about the quality you can backup your dvds to dual-layer discs with DVDFab. Also I have noticed that if you just rip the main movie, the quality is better of the movie but if you are anything like me you want the menus. Other than that there isnt much else you can do for quality. There is a free version of DVDFab available but I believe im not allowed to post the link

Dvd decrypter and dvd shrink are no longer being updated. They haven't been in at least 3 years.

    The process I use is:

    rip with dvdfab

    use fixvts on the results

    compress with dvd shrink

    burn with imgburn

    All of these are free.

Here is a link to the programs most reccomended by us here to use:

@mrt731 - you can post the link to the free version of dvdfab.

I owned a 51" SONY HDTV (that supported 1080i, 720p and 480p) and that is the reason why I'm not a fan of those simple one click ripping and burning programs out there. When it comes to DVD backup, I'm not in any hurry, I'm all for 3 -> 4 steps ripping and backup process because all I want is quality in the long run.

For 2 - 3 hrs long movie (any movies that needed 20% or higher compressions), I used DVD-Rebuilder Pro + CCE SP2 to encode and burn with either Nero Burning Rom or ImgBurn. I know lots of people here despise Nero, but I've been burning flawlessly using Nero Burning Rom/Express for ages.

There are lots of methods and lots of ripping and backup programs out there (free or not), but it really depends on experiences plus user's knowledge in the end. There are no right or wrong ripping/backup process if your fully satisfied with the method your using in the end result. Below are few programs that I used and I've been ripping and burning happily without any issues at all.

DVDFab HD Decrypter - to rip
VobBlanker - to delete/blank out unwanted junks
DVD-Rebuilder + CCE SP 2 - to encode (20% or higher compressions needed)
    Recode 3 - to transcode (1% - 18% compressions needed)
Nero Burning Rom/Express or ImgBurn - to burn

NOTE: (a) Recode 3 is from the same guy who brought us the once greatest DVD Shrink, so if you don't have Recode 3, simply use DVD Shrink. (b) I honestly recommend VobBlanker and FixVTS (these 2 freebies are awesome), they're very easy to use and will save lots of headaches down the road. (c) Please use high quality DVD+R media and booktyped them to DVD-ROM for all dvd players compatible.
