    Hey all,
I am not sure how to compress my ripped VIDEO TS folder in order to save space on my harddrive while maintaining ease of access and quality of playback. I'm only aware of a few things Xvid, Divx, other MPG 4 variants, and most recently Nero Digital. I apologize if this is a newbie question but I've spent weeks just learning how to rip and burn and I haven't gotten as far as maintaining the video files that I don't care to burn in a certain format on the harddrive. My hope is that there is a way for me to store a typical 7 GB DvD on my harddrive with full features and quality with well, maybe 200 MB or less. This maybe dreaming I don't know. I've recently tried a new transcoder called ratdvd from the afterdawn home page but I haven't figured out how to convert my exhisting files, not only VIDEO TS folders but mpeg and other codecs as well. It (ratDvD) reduces a 7 GB DvD to about 3; I hope that this is not the best that is available at this time. If there are any suggestions for great compression with ease of access while maintaining at least SVCD/VCD quality please let me know in detail the programs needed and hopefully any useful lessons you've learned while doing it. Again I apologize if this question is out of place or otherwise messed up.

    Thanks in advance Dissones4u

Two pass divx (or xvid) encoding in AutoGordianKnot.
Probably the easiest and most efficient way of doing it.

Use this link and download DVDx v2.3 With this software you can convert entire dvd's to files that are less than 700mb with very little loss in quality. download a bitrate calculater so you can put in the correct bit rate for the size movie you want. note: you get the best results if you use 1150 kbs in vcd format but you will have to split to two files if you want to burn to cd-r for play in your dvd player. your dreaming if you think there is any software available that can convert an entire dvd to approx. 200mb.

Thanks for the advise guys. I'm going to spend some time and try multiple formats. I do not want to burn these I will be keeping them on hard disk. That is why I was hoping to get the smallest file possible while maintaining vcd quality.

    Thanks again, Dissones4u
