    I use Winamp 2.80 still

takes less than 8meg mem and is still, by far, my mp3 player of choice.

I've been using Winamp for so long that I can't even remember when I first started. It just keeps getting better and more feature filled. The new version rips cds and converts them to Mp3, and it also plays several video file formats. To rip and convert however requires that you purchase the deluxe version. The free version is still a good choice for playing mp3s. Another must have freeware choice that I would recommend also does just about everything with audio and its a faster ripper and converter than Winamp. The best part is that it uses Lame to encode. I'm talking about dBpowerAMP, and it's spyware, and Ad free. It requires a little setting up but the instrucions are available on its web site. Get it here.

you should use coolplayer. It uses the mad decoder and has better sound quality than winamp even when it's using the mad plugin. It's very utilitarian and simple to use. I'd reccomend it. It's also a very small download at only 318 kb

EDIT: Another thing. When I run coolplayer it uses very little resources, it doesn't even use 7 megs of my memory
