Hi, I backup movies using DVD Shrink to rip the movie and Nero to burn it.However, I noticed that if I 'allow' DVD Shrink to compress movie, the size of the compressed movie always seems to exceed the target size of of a single-layer DVD-R...even though it doesn't go 'into the red'?

I have to manually 'custom-ratio' shrink the movie further before it will fit onto the blank DVD-R. My question is what is the MAXIMUM size I can burn onto a blank DVD-R? So far, by trial and error...I have been able to accomodate 4,396MB but I think there's still room to fit more...although probably not much more?

I think Shrink (and others on this forum) have recommended not going over 4.4 gigabytes to be absolutely sure the movie will fit on one disc (even though you're right, the discs are labeled as being up to 4.7gb). But I'm wondering about what you said about DVD Shrink's compressions being too big for a single-sided disc? That definitely shouldn't be happening -- the whole point of compression is for it all to fit on one side. If it's not in the red on Shrink, it must be under 4.4 gb (or thereabouts) -- what exactly are you seeing that makes you think it's too big? Are you having burning problems afterward? I use Shrink constantly and have never had this problem. More details please!

When DVD Shrink compresses the movie and it it stays in the green region ( usually just over 4.4GB ); when I attempt to burn this movie to DVD-R using Nero, I get a message that it will not fit onto the DVD-R. Therefore, I usually have to manually 'custom ratio' DVD Shrink to reduce the movie to below 4.4GB.

Ironically, I can fit over 4.4GB on a DVD+R even though it has the same capacity as a DVD-R...why's this? Since I primarily use DVD-R's, I'm interested to know what's the maximum capacity I can fit onto a blank? Also, why the discrepancy between DVD-R and DVD+R? Is there a 'setting' I can change in Nero which will allow me to burn the same capacity onto DVD-R as DVD+R? FYI, I have also used another burn program ( ULead ) and obtained exactly the same result...

The blank media I use ( both DVD+/-R ) come from Ritek, Verbatim, TDK, Fuji & the DVD writer is a Pioneer DVR-107D.
