Can someone explain to me the purpose of a DVD-R disc? They don't seem to work on most DVD Players, so what are they used for? Do they hold any advantage? Thanks.

I think that you will find that the DVD-R is the most compatable format used with most DVD players. Most older style players accept the +R format, some accept both the +R and-R.

If you have a player that will not accept the +R format then you can BOOKTYPE you +R discs to DVD-ROM

Gwen, don't you mean: most older players exept [bold]-R[/bold]. That's what I've always believed? Am I wrong here?

W/o booktyping -R is more compatible, w/ booktyping +R takes teh cake.

@GlueEater, Hi, now you've got me thinking, I always thought it was as I said but now I am a little unsure.

Let's open it up for debate as my curiousity has now gotten to me.

    discussion closed...LOL

the real CORRECT answer to that is as follows:

dvd-r is MORE compatible than dvd+r in stand alone dvd players, but dvd+r booktyped to dvd-rom has them BOTH beat hands down~ :)

the "short list" for compatibility: from "highest to lowest"

    1. dvd-rom (this included pressed dvd from hollywood and dvd+r format booktyped to dvd-rom)

    2. dvd-r

    3. dvd+r

    4. dvd-/+r DL (dual/double layer media is still far from being highly compatible in standalone dvd players, in and of itself, but booktyping the dvd+r DL to dvd-rom DOES INDEED help~)

    docTY~

Thanks Doc, that's what I thought. Good to know.

    @Gwen

    "that's what I thought"

I didn't mean that as a slam or anything.

keep up the good work you 2, i'm not in the newbies forum very much, but i do read some of the threads... :) you 2 seem to have it ALL under control~

happy holidays and happy new year...in a few days of course~

    docTY~

edited: gwen, the answers are all in MY post...you were correct in saying that dvd-r are the most widely accepted in standalones (speaking pre-booktyping dvd+r of course) but, the some of the older units are NOT able to read dvd+r properly~ that is where glueeater was correct~ :)
