What is unlock a phone mean guy?

    Hi i'm so new to all this stuff, what does unlock the phone mean guy? What can your phone do after unlocked?
    And i have a question say i download a java game but it say for v180 would it work on V188, and how do i copy it from my computer to my V188 i have a usb cable and i tried to connect it to my laptop but it can't find the driver for the phone.??? help me
