What is "unlocking" all about?

    Can someone tell me exactly what "unlocking" a phone does? I see people looking for codes, but I have no idea what it's all about.

    well its so that they can unlock the network they where origonaly on so that they can use any network by puting in a different sim card into the phone. Thats why you get these codes to unlock it.

    how do you exactly unlock the phones?? do you use some sirt of software?

    you enter codes according to your phones IMEI number and model.
