I've been reading a bunch of reviews on the new WD Raptor 74GB SATA hard drives and get all tingly at the thought of two in RAID 0. In RAID 0 I read that they read from disc as fast as most 7,200 RMP drives read from cache. That's smokin'! I've got two WD 80GB JB's in RAID 0 now but I want more speed!!! Of course a 42" Plasma display would be nice but I just can't seem to find that four grand I've got laying around here somewhere :(

What are you fellas lusting for? Besides women - that's a given :)

    1. 1TB drives (i need 8 of them... um... now)
    2. solid state drives
    3. 0.0000001 d.p. CRT, 19"
    4. Genius Pills

More realistically: 150w peltier, 10x92mm Vantec Tornado fans, a nice ultra-loud CPU fan and caffine pills

I think those genius pills are far over due. He he

If you want a loud CPU fan, get a used Mac 7200/90 I have one (got for free) and the fan is crazy crazy loud. I think I will use it in the summer to cool down my entire apt. But realistically I have been eyeing a new LCD monitor/Tv. The Sharp 30inch wide screen, or a view sonic N3000w would be really nice. Are you offering Nephilim, the sharp I have been eyeing is only $6000 Can (not including the $900 tax on it). Only a third my income, but that I will have take up with NSERC.

If you want to quieten the Mac down, take the PSU out and replace the fan in it (the bearing die on them).

As for lustful kit - I have had my eye on a Quad Xeon system for a while now, as both my Dual-P3 systems are getting a bit overworked.

I must admit to being tempted by the thought of a Dual or Quad 64-bit AMD system though, just waiting for the software really..

Have a look at these two Raid adapters:

Imagine THOSE cards with a full complement of Raptors on a 66 MHz bus!!!!!

    I can only dream..

    Byeee...

doc, that RAIDXL is mighty interesting. It's nice to see more innovation in the hard disk area.

You're making things more expensive for me by showing me these things!

    Cheers

I don't mind the noise, well yet at least. I did get it free as my supervisor was throwing it out. I do want to play with the software and network options first.

Your 3Ware link has my mouth watering.
Unrelated but related, I bought a Bytecc 350U2F encloser for one of my old 60Gb hard drives. It connects by either USB2 or Firewire 1394A (I could have got the faster Firewire, but I don't have the port on my Notebook). So now I have been looking at 200Gb harddrives (it claims will suport over 300Gb drives), but I want to pay less than a dollar a GB at this level, so need to wait sometime. Right now Cheapest Maxtor 200Gb is $220 Can.

Its funny though, My notebook 4200rpm 60Gb is the bottle neck when moving files. Actually faster to use it as the Data analysis drive.

i am actually waiting for netcell to release the sata version of their raidxl cards, i want a terrabyte raid...i actually have a 36GB raptor, and it kicks ass, but now i want the 74GB version...that and a 9700 pro with a watercool peltier to overclock it beyond a 9800XT, and finally i want to build another comp, with the athlon 64, 3400+, that with a terrabyte raid and a 74GB raptor would quite literally cause me to faint (if i was to own it) but for that i need another job, so i better start looking

Prisoner, have you seen the new 7,200 rpm notebook drives Hitachi is putting out? Those things are supposed to really blaze.

I'd be happy with your system Nephilim and it's what I aspire to. Mine will have as much rdram as I can afford at the time so a different mobo I suspect. Plus sata raid with a couple of 200 gig hdd's as I do lots of image manipulation with Photoshop. My dream is to go for quite a high end gpu as well. I fool myself that I'll need it as programs become more cpu intensive but I know deep down the I'm also a bit of a game freak. As for the new 64 bit AMD chips and mobo architechture (another consideration) I'm a little reticent about it. Only until all the initial problems are sorted. Then I'll probably want a 64 bit system.

Thanks jonns :) I'm pleased as punch with it.

My comp before this one was built on an Intel D850MV mobo using RDRAM. Sis is supposed to have a new chipset that supports quad-channel RDRAM which is kinda interesting until you see the prices of RDRAM nowadays.

I won't be doing any major upgrading until PCI Express has been around for a bit, everything is native SATA and most importantly, I can even dream of affording it! Maybe some enterprising mobo manufacturer will have integrated RAIDXL by then....here's to wishing!

I didn`t know about Notebook 7200rpm drives. Looks cool, but really expensive. Toshiba now includes a 5400rpm drive with the new compariable notebook to mine the P20. But mine has been required for since I bought it March 2003.

But if we talk about dreams, I would love an OS on a ROM chip. This just makes sence to me, instant on when turn on, no loading. However no updates and Win secrity would suck, but I would like an OS on Rom, just like the early days before Windows.

Also the Viewsonic 30inch LCD would be nice or the Samsung 30 or 37 inch LCD screens. If I only had $6000. I don`t think I would buy Blu-ray, I think the AOD (HD-DVD) will win.

no matter which burner u get the blu-ray or aod (hd dvd)...still gonna have to wait at least another year until they come out...not to mention i wouldnt buy it when they first come out they will cost sooo much

A dvd burner, just because i'd like to have a reason to ask annoying questions in the dvd sections of this site. and a 3,5mb dsl connection, my 1,5mb is ok, but i just want more power.

    Really cool system, Nephilim!
Instead of a hard drive, I think I would like to take a whole bunch of 4GB Compact Flash cards and make a faster rewritable solid state system. Praetor you had the right idea all along. Also with the new IBM tunneling electrons, it can be larger (storage), more compact and faster. But will have to wait at least a year for the chips.
